I have to say that having once lived in the Ecclesfield area for quite a few years I had never come across talk of a RFC landing field in those parts. Fascinating!

The RNAS had an airfield at Coal Aston ( present day Jordanthorpe estate) where a detachment was based... mainly for training purposes. This was reinforced by "A" flight 33squadron RFC in the night fighter role. They also had another landing site at Redmires.In the late 1920s Coal Aston was planned as Sheffield's airport and additional land purchased by the Corporation but by 1933 the Corporation abandoned the plans and set the land aside for housing!
