Anyone remember what the most frequent service was in South Yorkshire say over the past 30 years. I can remember the 69 been one of the most frequent between Sheffield and Rotherham with it departing every minute between 06:00 and 07:00 and 16:00 and 17:00 each day for the steelworkers in the lower don valley. It was a 2 - 5 minute service at off-peak times.
Were there any more frequent services like this over the last 30 years in South Yorkshire?

In a mid 80's PTE publication called Fact's and Figure's (lost my copy ![>:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/angry.png) ) The busiest and most frequent service of the time was 60 Crimicar lane/Ranmoor. Between 0800 and 0900 a bus went through Fitzalan square every minute and a half?. Brown and Cream do you have anymore information on that?. The 52's around 1989 were very frequent with the Eager beaver's and Sheffield & District/SUT/Yorkshire terrier all operating on portian's of the route. Not sure of actual frequency though.

Mmmmmmmmmmm cs1 is right however i think the publication came under fire as it was wrong I would go for the 52's and the 69's however the 69's would not have been that busy in 1989 I would say earlier probably 1950s/60s as I have said before my grandfather worked at what is now magna and as my big brother sez: you waited in exchange st and you watched a decker unload if he wasnt on that one another 1 or even 2 had appeared in that time.

Quite right CS1, the publication you mention (version 1 and 2) states that the 60 is the most frequent at every minute and a half between 0800 and 0900. However, during the day, the 69 ran every 6 minutes, 52 every 6 (although some ran to Handsworth during the day) and The Princes' ran every 6 as well. You could even go to things like the 42/53 which ran every 6 at peak etc. It's difficult to gauge as unscheduled extras would run as per inspectors requirements. In 1989 service 52 ran every 3 minutes with the Beavers, and my copies of the running boards suggest 27 vehicles as the PVR.

How times change regarding the 69, it now struggles with an half hourly frequency! then again most of the labour workforce has been lost on this route now that all the Steelworks have gone, only really Toyoda left at Ickles and even that is laying off around 400 staff in a months time.
Regarding the Princes' is this the old 70/71 services to Fairleigh?

Part of the problem is some traffic is lost due to companies in ability to react when new companies move into the area.
CS1 is right about 70/71 if 40 years ago you would have said that service would cease you would have been laughed at , remember that the 51 in some ways does well to keep a high freq at lodge moor now the principle reason for it been there - the hospital as gone. The other service that as been lost is football specials.

^ Whilst I don't know the area I presume that if there has been a high frequency service to an area, people will be accustomed to it and => use it. Hence, whilst a main traffic generator may have gone, there will still have been a user base elsewhere along the route?

Didn't the 55 Rossington used to be every 5 minutes a couple of years ago? I'm sure I remember seeing pink line branded SPDs parked up by the South Bus Station with "Every 5 Minutes" in the circle on the branding...

I have a copy of "facts and figures" (or, I had one, not spotted it recently) - I remember something about the 51 being the hilliest route in it too. The 52 was certainly every three minutes during the day from Crookes to Handsworth/ Ballifield, but a reduced service to Woodhouse - Terrier, Sheffield & District and SUT competed on it -I can't remember whether (the independant) SUT ran on it, but the SYT owned SUT certainly ran on it - it was before my time down here. Additionally, Sheffield Omnibus competed on the 52 later on, but that was a ten minute evening service (with no daytime journeys) IIRC.

I think a few years ago 55's were very frequent maybe even upto every 5 minutes, but not been for quite some time now.

I knew the 69 was a 5-6 minute service years back but did not think it used to operate every minute at shift changes / peak times! then again the route was all steelworks apart from Tinsley which was the only residential district on the route.
