I don't think the country is been harsh, not surprising at all. Can anyone suggest an operator which could possibly be worse? Lots of people are quick to slag Arriva but look at their operations now. Very well run with clean stock. Arriva suffered from taking tenders over from another that had gone in too low, they had the sense to tender more realistically but were undercut by Northern who obviously tendered on the basis of never cleaning trains properly. 10 years ago I may have agreed with people slagging Arriva off but not now.

I recently read an interesting article which was pleading with the government to abandon HS2 and spend the enormous amount of money on electrifying all of our lines and operating services for everyone one, and not just for an elite who, " want to arrive at a destination before they set off".
The article talks of the efficiency of the trains in the area served by the old Southern electrics in comparison with the cost and pollution of DMU's.....and what we have in the North makes the point .

I see Northern have just won an award....for having environmentally friendly train washing equipment. I shall think about that the next time I board a nodding donkey!

As a boring old contributor to this site I have complained, bitterly, about Northern's "Rattle Trap" class 142's for years. Today the "boss" and I, perforce, found ourselves on one. What a shocking ride! I have just written to Northern suggesting they should carry a "Health Warning " to intending users. My wife is in agony with her back and I am suffering from her misery!
Seriously, the 142's ride was appalling; not helped by our being forced to sit on benches which I doubt even a bus-operator would find acceptable in this day and age!

As a regular commuter on Northern services Throughout Yorkshire and neighbouring counties i personally am more than satisfield with the service from Northern, However the only issue i have is with a minority of train crew, one only 2 days ago did nothing but complain, he didnt like people, didn't like the job, didnt like trains etc - so then takes it out on the paying passenger? otherwise the majority are very freindly polite and professional, think Northern should employ some undercover passengers!
