An extra Sheffield-Manchester would be great. Maybe even a Barnsley-Sheffield-Manchester Piccadilly.

I agree about the capacity between Manchester Picadilly and Sheffield to be honest, Doncaster-Cleethorpes definitely doesn't need it though and would all the stations be able to accomodate it anyway? If it wasn't for the stopping service then I'd say an extra hourly TPE service between Sheffield and Manchester Picadilly would be ideal. Regardless of the amount of services that use Sheffield - Doncaster that section still can get rather full, perhaps an extra Manchester - Doncaster or Manchester - Scunthorpe, or even just doubling up between one station or another. Platform lengths only become an issue at Chinley, Dore, Habrough & Grimsby Town when 6 coaches are used. The full section really does need doubling up during the summer but realistically the same applies for Scarborough services where they have to attach / detach at Leeds.

Perhaps if national rail actually thought things through and realised there are three fast trains at around 42mins, 50mins and 54mins to Sheffield then two stopping trains at 04 and 24.
So the 47mins barely picks anyone up because they get on the Transpennine at 42mins.
I know it's difficult with long distance trains to time well but it has always been stupid that 3 fast trains are within 15 mins of each other then 45 min wait for another fast service
They need to somehow review the times.

There are timetable recasts in the pipeline in December 2017 for the Sheffield to Doncaster corridor. Part of this is a work towards more logical clockface timings.

An extra Sheffield-Manchester would be great. Maybe even a Barnsley-Sheffield-Manchester Piccadilly. Now this I'd like to see. But then I'd also like to see Woodhead Tunnel open, SuperTram to the other side of sheffield, and two tracks Barnsley to Huddersfield. I doubt any of it will happen.

Coincidentally the train shown in the picture in the article (185 108) is one of two TPE have already rebranded (the other being 185 123) pbs.twimg.com/media/Ce8kXnHWAAIanWV.jpg. Northern had a few peak cancellations due to lack of available units too so a bumpy start for them both.
