I apologise then if that's the case it was advertised, however I have noticed first are advertising for drivers, however a new driver let's someone override unknowingly they get reported by the inspector to the management they in for a discipline or possible dismissal, what about through covid when we was doing a absolute fantastic job (apparently) when no one bothered about overriding, looks like country back to normal and forgot about a deadly pandemic, however my past experience with a company ticket inspectors were in the management pockets and couldn't do enough boot licking tbh but that's my personal opinion, I always said to avoid trouble let them on and let them off as long as the ticket was in date and you was issuing fares correctly and paying money in correctly it didn't matter whether they was overriding to me,I never got any trouble I personally think that the only drivers who have got anything to worry about are the very small minority who might knowingly not issue the correct tickets etc. A small minority of drivers making money for themselves is something that’s happened all over the country especially on schools (not just First) for years although it’s nowhere near what it once was

I agree with that, that is why if anyone gets on my bus whichever company I work for, say it be Chesterfield or Sheffield or wherever, if they get on in that area and decide to stay on the bus as far as I'm concerned I've done my job by checking it's the right area with the ticket they get on with, if they wanna stay on that's up to them but I don't challenge them because, 1, it's not worth a slap, and 2 if I stopped a bus every time that happened I would end up with a lot of angry customers and a late bus

My idea is drive the bus safe, be friendly give good customer service and get home to my family safe, thats all that matters to me, I don't challenge anyone, not worth me getting assaulted for,

Especially since society as gone feral and to my previous comment it needs a police officer not a ticket inspector on board,

You don’t get paid any extra or any better thought of for doing it, the drivers who do are often the ones who get trouble on their bus

Exactly mate, I just hope the ticket inspectors would be more on taking the drivers view than the passe gers view especially as we both agree that its not worth the trouble and abuse

Curious to know if ticket inspectors will also have other roles such as discouraging feet on seats (this must cost First a lot of money as well replacing seat covers), intervene if there is a dispute over the disabled area and anti social behaviour or are they specifically just going to check tickets. Also will the bus still be the in the control of the bus driver if there are any issues.

I see First have placed adverts on their buses claiming inspectors will return and will start asking passengers for a ticket check. I thought that side of the business died with Mainline, is this for real or just a warning? Are First really going to employ people to travel on buses checking tickets, surely the driver does this when a passenger boards and a ticket check isn't necessary. They are not called Inspectors anymore, they are called Revenue Protection Officers and they have always been around. Ticket checks can happen on any bus at any time of day, any day of the week. They can also issue a penalty charge of a Standard Fare which is over £35, could be higher since I last checked. This is issued to customers who have made an honest mistake and are unable to present a valid ticket or ENCTS card. They are also trained to conduct interviews under caution and to submit an MG11 for prosecution for anyone travelling without a valid ticket. This is why it is important to retain your ticket until you have left the bus or bus station. The driver may check tickets when boarding, but he cannot possibly remember where every single passenger has paid for. He also has to concentrate on the road & safety, as well as giving great customer service. If a bus has over 50 customers on board, there is no way he can remember that the woman with ginger hair only paid to Heeley Retail park. It's not humanly possible. A driver can also request the assistance of an RPO if he is having a disruptive passenger without a valid ticket.

Especially since society as gone feral and to my previous comment it needs a police officer not a ticket inspector on board, The police cannot even find the time to deal with repeated incidences of vandalism these days, but I agree with you!

No one should go to work fearing assault. I totally agree, it is not worth putting yourself in harms way over a ticket.

On about vandalism/ticket inspectors… a few years ago I remember recovering a B7L from Carcroft with a broken window. A group of kids had tried to get on this driver’s bus at Woodlands shops towards Skellow but hadn’t got passes which he had challenged them for so they got off and there was another bus running right behind it which they got on and the driver let them on. They got off the bus at Carcroft and bricked the window of the bus where the driver had challenged them.

Had a team of 4 inspectors on my bus this morning. They stopped the bus at Olive Grove, boarded, checked everyone's tickets between them, there were no problems and they got off and we were on our way in less than 2 minutes. Very efficient. One used an app on his phone to check I had a valid ticket on my smartcard. They were all dressed in stab proof vests and hi viz gear and looked more like coppers than First staff!

I've yet to see them. I can't find anything on the First website or Twitter page about them. I wonder if they will be doing stings at bus stops for people getting off, as happens at train stations.
