Waiting for a bus on Church Street last night, I could not believe how many 95s/95As there were! I counted around 4 in the space of 20 minutes. Yet it's always a half hour wait for the 52/51, even the 120 has a substantial wait involved. It always seems to be like this at any time of the day. Not many people getting on the 95, most of the bus stop queue waiting for other buses. Considering Walkley already has the 31, 52 and 52a, is there really any need to run so many of these 95s? Seems barmy when there is a demand for other routes less catered for.

When the October budget cuts services come in to effect, they ought to make the 95 hourly on evenings and use the money saved to provide extra 52As, 51s and 120s. Half hourly through the daytime too instead of every 10 minutes or so.

Owlthorpe has no services, Hanging water has no services on a Sunday. I don't understand why some areas have such a high level of service when others have very low/no levels. Every time I have seen the 95 pull up at the Tinker Lane terminus, no one gets off, and it's not jam packed on South Road either!

Very rare for anyone to get off at tinkerlane stop as most have got off it round the corner. As for South Road that depends what time of day it is.

The one 20 doesn't actually go in to Hangingwater, it goes to Ranmoor and Nethergreen. There is a steep walk up Hangingwater Road to get to Fulwood Road for the 120.

Yes it don't go on hangingwater Road but both 83 and 120 do cross both parts of hangingwater Road which has stops close to each junction so not that far for people to walk to.

The 120 runs past the top of Hangingwater Road, as it runs along Fulwood Road but it doesn't go down it or up it, it goes straight. Nowhere near Oakbrook Road or the Porterbrook trail and the hill is very steep. If the area was in Ecclesfied or Firth Park, it would have a bus running around every nook and cranny of the estate 7 days a week because of the north bus partnership, tendered by the PTE. It's as though the South and South West don't exist as far as they are concerned.

Half hourly through the daytime too instead of every 10 minutes or so. Well I'm glad you're not in charge of setting timetables. Living in Walkley, I think I'm better placed to comment on the route and necessary frequency. The 95/95a isn't every 10 minutes during the daytime. It's every 15 minutes. And that frequency is definitely required. An hourly service in the evenings would be far too infrequent. It's also not accurate to say that Walkley is well served by the 31, 52 and 52a. The 31 only serves Lower Walkley (and is very infrequent), the 52a only serves Walkley Lane, so barely touches Walkley at all and the 52 only serves Crookes (apart from a few evening and weekend journeys that mirror the 52a) Your multi-post moan about the 95 seems to be based on a one-off experience where buses were bunched together (which does happen from time to time due to the length of the route and inevitable delays) but this will mean there will be a long gap until the next one. I could cite many examples of waiting for a 95 when multiple 51s, 52s and 120s have sailed past. It happens. But there certainly shouldn't be any reduction to any of these services.

I think having a frequent service running through the main road (52a) and having a less frequent but more "detailed service" running through the nooks and crannies for those who want an effective door to door service is a fair compromise. ajp79 Your neighbours in Stockbridge receive a far worse service between there and the city centre. And places like Owlthorpe have no service at all.

I don't have any neighbours in Stocksbridge. It's about 9 miles away from Walkley. There are unfortunately lots of areas of Sheffield that have little to no service. In an ideal world, this wouldn't be the case but reducing the frequency of relatively popular routes isn't the answer.
I agree that there should be a more frequent service on the 52/52a (I remember this, along with the 120's predecessor, the 60, being the most frequent services in my youth) but increasing the frequency of the 52/52a at the expense of the 95/95a would be a huge mistake and would greatly inconvenience the residents of Walkley who rely on the 95 - also a main road route - given the huge hill between Crookes and Walkley.
I don't know how busy the 95 is in the other direction but the extension to Meadowhall has certainly made reliability far worse and is probably responsible for your recent observation of multiple buses bunched together.

There have been several cuts to the core routes over the past few years (in terms of frequency), so I highly doubt they’d be looking at investing into door-2-door networks anytime soon! That’s like expecting Tesco to reduce stock levels of their top selling products and increasing lower selling product stock levels, so they’ve not got enough toilet roll to match usual demand, but they’ve got 100s of tubs of shoe polish to “compromise” incase 100s of people turned up for tubs of shoe polish one day.

Whilst I see your point, I don't agree with the analogy. Tesco does not rely on taxpayer money to provide their services. Even indirectly the bus companies do. The £2 single is a classic example of this. During and after the pandemic, the government pumped in millions of pounds into the industry, and the level of service has continued to decline. One of the main problems I see is poor traffic control of regular services like the 120's, 52/52a's and to a lesser degree 95/95a's they shouldn't be allowed to run so late that they often follow each other up the backside, and worse have to queue to get into Sheffield interchange, or even on high St. The worst I have ever seen was 4 together. Not on.

Yes, I do know how private companies and commercial routes work! I am not an idiot and don't appreciate being treated as one. When I said door to door, I meant services that go in to housing estates, like the 97 does around the Longley Farm Estate. Tesco are different to transport in that they do not receive tendership payments from local authorities, they are not following a pattern of what was once a public service. There is an argument that providing high network connectivity is better for overall profitability. If you can get a man to take the bus, instead of car, by providing a service that goes close to his home and provides convenience, you get him on the network and using the network for all of his travel needs. It's a way of reeling them in. If the nearest bus service is a mile walk away, infrequent and unreliable, then it's going to deter people from thinking of the bus for other journeys they make. Many of the nook and cranny estate exploring service are rendered by the council anyway, so your rant about bus companies being commercial is of limited relevance.
