It was announced to Doncaster Council last night that the green light had been given after an £18 million grant was obtained from the Regional Growth Fund.

Doesn't say when contruction is due to start, but it's about time! Will be dual-carriageway all the way from the M18.

I picked the item up on BBC Leeds TV this morning. It's good news for the Airport and will not only improve its passenger business but will especially assist future air freight growth. It is absolutely necessary, if the 000's of jobs at the extended ( and freed up) Business Park that are promised are to materialise. Well done Donny!

Following a few comments on another site I checked with the S.Y. 2005 Local Transport Plan which quotes a total cost of £103 million of which the DfT was to make a contribution of some 55% with the balance ( £46 Million) to be made up by private finance. The 2 year project was, at that time, forecast to create 11,000 jobs but showed the following as "risks" to deliverability:Level of private sector contribution and the timetable( and outcome) of a Public Inquiry.

That said isn't a further tranche of EU funding likely to be on the cards?

Finally found some official plans for the link road - shows how close it will be to Rossington! (and I didnt realise just how close Rosso is to the M18!!).

Wonder how it will cross A638 at Parrotts corner? - full flyover/underpass maybe?.....or just traffic lights/roundabout I suspect!

Not bad news at all! But £18m is hardly going to cover much, for such a length of new road and dual-carriageway at that. So where's the rest of the money coming from towards this scheme? Also what about the proposals for the inland rail-port at Rossington just off the White Rose Way roundabout at Junction 3?

A lot has happened since 2005 lysander, most notably the announcement of the huge inland port at Rossington. I understand a good deal of money is coming from this to help finance the link road.

I really don't think the news on Tuesday was merely about funding, it was as much to do with endorsement and confidence of the project. Everything is in place to commence work...ecological and structural surveys have been carried out, local planning permission has been granted etc. All it ever needed was rubber stamping from the greater power of Westminster. I'm sure the £18 million could have been raised elsewhere.

Imagine if the funding was not granted? This would have meant the powers that be would have gone through the proposal with a fine tooth comb and discovered it wasn't viable or strong enough to warrant the funding. Reasons would have been given as to why not and I fear this would have had serious repercussions on the airport and inland port.

A chap I know very well, whose company, and indeed his job, depended hugely on the decision went though a period of elation for an hour or so but he is now subdued beyond belief. There's been so much emotional energy, stress and such a lot hanging on this announcement that people are just too brow-beaten to get carried away.

I completely understand. The new estimate of cost is, I understand ,£170 million and as one who knows what it means to Rossington....and not just for jobs....I really hope it happens. I suppose in a smaller but similar way the £18m is comparable with the £180,000 for tram-train....a commitment!

The road will make access to the Rossington / Finningley Side of Doncaster much easier. I work in Rossington which is a stones throw from J3 M18 but takes 20mins to get to because of the current long way round through town.

The news story contained within the link is dated today so it serves to revitalise the thread which has been inactive for over a year.

Threads in the aviation section seem to grow weeds quickly due to lack of footfall.

Lysander has a fair point. DMBC were never going to turn this down. The big news will be in a few days, when we find out who the contractors are and how many jobs the construction phase will create.

Footfall...The Aviation section is currently as nearly moribund as is the Airport to which it is dedicated. However, in today's Star it is reported that planning permission for the road was granted...yesterday... and that work is expected to start on the £60 million scheme in August.

Dan Fell, Doncaster's Chamber of Commerce deputy CEx said," This starts to make the airport look not just like Doncaster's local airport, but also Sheffield's too, At the moment you can be taking 40 minutes to an hour to drive to Robin Hood Airport from Sheffield. This will mean it is inside 30 minutes. From an airline's point of view, I would expect 30 minutes from Britain's fifth largest city is quite attractive".
