i see from the derbyshire service changes page first are taking over the 80 from chesterfield to killamarsh theres no time tables up yet though

Still run as service 80 between Chesterfield and Killamarsh (Rowan Tree). 120K will still be going ahead as planned now, but following the award and the fact it's only a 51 week contract for both services, it will be interesting to see how it unfolds. The new EMCA are taking over the public transport functions of DCC over the course of the next 12 months. |

Olive Grove have a considerable number of spare vehicles, in theory I am told. 63902 should be back in service soon and it's rumoured that more Streetlites from other parts of the country will be joining the fleet, so that should mean the contract can be filled adequately. It's definitely a change in modus operandus for First, as they've rarely seemed interested in council tendered work before. Now we have the new tendered 86, 80 and 120.

Olive Grove have a considerable number of spare vehicles, in theory I am told. 63902 should be back in service soon and it's rumoured that more Streetlites from other parts of the country will be joining the fleet, so that should mean the contract can be filled adequately. It's definitely a change in modus operandus for First, as they've rarely seemed interested in council tendered work before. Now we have the new tendered 86, 80 and 120. They cannot meet service, they are pulling service work early afternoon to cover the school's and then as in the morning re-introducing buses. They are over staffed driver wise though which is why they can now be confident in the tendering process. So you have FSY covering rail replacement work in West Yorkshire while service work drops in Sheffield. |

It is untrue, as you have been told multiple times, considering that the depot still consistently runs short on buses every day. |

I think someone that gives their location as S2 3GA knows a lot more about fleet availability, number of spares etc, than us mere mortals.

In theory and practically are completely different. The amount of buses OG has is higher than the PVR. This however does not cover the vast amount of breakdowns and VORs, so while on paper it might seem there’s enough to be spares, in reality there isn’t. |

I’m glad that First are bidding seriously for tenders, it always feels wrong to see one of the main operators in an area not seem interested in defending/expanding and leaving marginal markets to minor operators, since that feels like a vicious circle
However, we’ve been over the “spares” several times now. It’s one thing to count up the number of buses sat at a depot off-peak and assume that there are plenty of spare vehicles
But this ignores several fundamental points, e.g.
Operators like First now provide a lot of school buses (in the absence of providers like MASS), so something that appears “spare” at lunchtime might be working at other hours
Buses are complicated creatures these days, it may not be obvious why something is unfit for service (given all of the computer issues etc that may affect availability), just because something looks okay externally doesn’t mean it’s fit to turn a wheel in public service
I’m glad the drivers issue seems better (not just at First, but industry wide, not perfect but better). However I trust those in the industry who mention problems with vehicles. That said, I appreciate some information is confidential, you wouldn’t want to alarm passengers etc etc

We seem to have more than our fair share of google "experts" whose "knowledge" is based on what is written on the various forums and other social media sites. Several members of this forum have extensive experience in the bus industry and in some cases at fairly senior levels. They are constantly challenged by people who clearly have little or no industry experience with child like comments and suggestions. It grinds us down and to be honest I think most of us just ignore these comments but that does not stop them, they just work on the theory that we have stopped commenting because they have "won". NO we just get tired of the same things again and again with no let up.I can accept that not everyone has a working knowledge of the industry but to challenge those who do and assert you are right is not the way to learn. |

You don't know what "experience" others have in the industry or not. How could you? It's an anonymous forum where no one's credentials are checked. I don't know if you genuinely have worked for First or Stagecoach or TM,so I won't believe anything you say is absolute gospel. Your comment about driver shortages being on a "hiatus" is frankly a naive thing to say when no one knows what the future holds. These men are earning more than minimum wage in quite an exciting role and will be well aware that it's not 9-5 from their training. The drivers shadow their trainer drivers on their shift patterns before they go solo. Many loyal drivers stay with the company for decades. |
