Stagecoach's contract came to an end and the mayor chose to bring it in house rather than putting a new tender out, nothing more to it than that really. I get the feeling that Mr Coppard is having second thoughts about renewing them after seeing what it will cost. I suspect He may wait and try and get some funding from elsewhere. He Seems hell bent on blowing his transport budget on buses. Well he's certainly not blowing his wad on tram conductor wages, the standard of employee has dropped massively since SYMCA took over. It's more evidence to support a guided busway. It costs around £600 million to maintain the Supertram Infrastructure over a 30 year period (Source:https://www.rothbiz.co.uk/2024/01/news-8369-all-south-yorkshire-councils.html#:~:text=Rothbiz%20revealed%20in%20November%20that,each%20year%2C%20reducing%20over%20time.) compared to £363 million for a guided busway (source:https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-66812616). That's a difference of £236 million pounds, money that could be used to improve bus services, increase ENCTS privileges and provide services to areas not currently served, such as Lydgate Lane, Whiteley Lane (for Forge Dam) and the Rainbow Estate in Hackenthorpe. Put simply, a busway would deliver benefits for all of the city, not just selected areas as the tram does now and also provide better customer service as the bus drivers have far better attitudes and are more helpful than the tram conductors (cheap labour, agency workers?), I find.
