Going down Mansfield Road the other day, I noticed what appears to be an old turning circle on the west side of the road. Am I right in thinking that this was adjacent to the old tram terminus at Intake and was provided when the trams were replaced by buses.
It does seem extraordinary that the opportunity was not taken to extend the route beyond this point rather than provide a like for like replacement. Or is it the case that all the housing development south and west of this point has all happened since 1960?

i believe th tram terminated a little higher up the road nearer the traffic light controlled cross roads.
the frechville estates were pre 60s, more like 40s and 50s. the hackenthorpe estate as built around 53, though the land aquired from derbyshire farmers in 38. according to my house's deeds.
as for extending yes great idea but council couldnt afford to, plans to rid city of trams alread foot.
oddest thing to me is how long the 95s survived turning there instead of being extended outbound. indeed the 41 could have been an extended 95.

Looking at my map of Sheffield trams it looks as though the terminus is where the tram track ended the map as it as 1/4 of mile beyond hollingsend road on the "country" side of hollingsend road Suspect the bus service was not extended as there were services that went into the then newish estates of hackenthorpe etc there could have been problems with East Midlands objecting to the service been extended . Remember in those days you had to go to traffic court and provide a valid reason for extending a service or putting a new one in . Intake bus terminus became world famous (round here!) in 1976 when the 95 together with the 75/6 were the last places that traditional Sheffield buses were used on service. Indeed intake saw the final arrival of a scheduled stage carriage service using a traditional bus ie front engined rear entrance in Sheffield/ south Yorkshire the bus was Regent V/ Alexander 878 the sister of 874 which is kept at the SYTT premises at tinsley The 95 service was run from Leadmill road (there may have been the odd journey done by other garages like most Sheffield routes) Hope this answers the intake question The website for 874 members.aol.com/AEC7874WJ/7874/Picture of 874 at the SYTT's new premises at Tinsley, while I was on the last regent to intake i hadn't started taking photos then 874 should be at norton show onthe 9th august
