Does anyone know if Northern rail are planning to invest in new rolling stock within the next 100 years? The trains they currently use are usually so old and rubbish. If they got one person operated stock like most companies in the country they wouldn't have to have RCIs on board to open doors etc, saving money at quiet times and resulting in less cancellations and delays.

What about those bus-like ones, think there 142 class and 144. They are surley so out dated they are good for only the skip! I hear they have some trains the same as heathrow express trains, but have never seen them!

What's wrong with the 14x series? Well, quite a lot I suppose, but they do the job.
The refurb of the 321/9s- is this why 321423 (?) in Silverlink County livery has been operating Doncaster-Leeds lately?

The 142's, 143's and 144's on the whole arn't that old. They were built around 1988 which especially is not old compared to the class 101's which were designed and built in the 1950's and continued right up to 2003 operating suburban routes in Manchester. We have a lot to thank the pacers for. They are or atleast, were, cheap to run and build and probably helped save lines such as the Penistone line from being axed. They have been made more comfortable in recent years by having the bus seats taken out and generally refurbed. When i travelled by train out of Barnsley i always preferred the 156 sprinters but i'll be sad to see the pacers go when they do.

Better than the 141s were supposed to be, anyway, and a lot better than a closed line.

Yep, the pacers are brilliant.
The 141's might be plowing their trade in Iran but when i was still spotting on at the end of platform 4/8 a decade and a bit ago they were something to look at all stored in the BREL? now Wabtec? bit rusty locally but still read Railway Mag and Rail.
Plus the pacers on the doncaster to sheff route bring back memories.
The one thing to be said about pacers is they have personality.
