Crackdown on railway trespassing More youngsters are trespassing on the tracks, officials say CCTV cameras are being put up and railway workers are patrolling the tracks in parts of the region to try to keep children out of danger. Network Rail says more youngsters are trespassing near or on the tracks every year during the school holidays.
There have been 18 incidents reported in the last month, but officials believe the amount of trespassing could much higher.
Safety officers are now installing hidden cameras in hotspots.
They believe this year's good weather is one factor in the rising number of youngsters trespassing on the tracks.
Ben Herbert from Network Rail said: "Whether railways have a bit of a deadly fascination for children - it's the danger - I don't know.
"But unfortunately, what we do find year on year is that kids do get on the track and are playing on the railways.
"And if we can prevent someone being on the track or being involved in an incident this summer by having our staff out and about then as far as we're concerned, that'll be worth it.
