Is this the last straw for Sheffield City Airport Heliport?
South Yorkshire Police has announced it will stop running its force helicopter in January 2013 when it joins a single national police helicopter service. The National Police Air Service will see 23 aircraft operate from 20 bases. When South Yorkshire Police grounds its helicopter, the nearest police helicopters will be based in West Yorkshire, Humberside and Derbyshire.

North Midlands is kept right behind the shed at Swanwick Junction on the Midland Railway as I recall. (So , yes nr Ripley)
I would guess the West Yorks one kept nr Wakefield would also serve our area frequently?!.
I dont know where Humbersides is kept (probably Humberside airport?)
No offence, but i would have thought South Yorkshires chopper is, how should I put it tactfully, OVERWORKED/MUCH NEEDED?!... ;D

But this is the all to do with combining the police forces to make it better and make savings.
If you have not noticed the Traffic Cops have been combine into a Yorkshire and Humberside force and seem to be working well.
Remember everyone are have to make cuts, so the police are no different.

This is really quite old news as the prospect of SY losing its dedicated helicopter has been on the cards for months ( which is probably why the Star has been running reports of how many occasions the machine has been in operation) The heliport, the last time I checked, has but one aircraft based there ( NEETS are scheduled to become a second client) and the police helicopter will still use the Tinsley Park site for refuelling etc. BUT....a lack of use will doubtless encourage the owners to apply for the heliport's 40 acres to be redeveloped despite it being within the green belt. Strangely, the heliport is slap bang in the middle of the newly announced Enterprise zone, is next door to the Advanced Manufacturing Park and is adjacent to the motorway network...a perfect situation for a small airport!!!

South Yorkshire Police have now opted out and will retain their own chopper, however it isn't stated as to where it will be located. Presumably it will be in the same current location, though you never know!

Glad it's staying with us and probably stay where it is now for the time being.

And Sheffield City Heliport has something to remain open for - well for now at least!

The heliport is unlicensed and its owners don't appear to be interested in developing any traffic. For how long do the Police have an agreement? What's the betting on it all being closed and an application made to develop the site which is in the "Green Belt"?
