With the Yorkshire Air Ambulance now gone and the South Yorkshire Police chopper about to bite the dust, what is the future for the Sheffield City Heliport. Will it finally at long last now just simply become an expansion to the Sheffield Business Park or will it remain for the near future, with the hope that there may be some other demand for its use.?

It's built on the Green Belt...which is why Peel aren't able to build the extension to the Business Park on it. There must currently be some other useage since the Business Park have issued a notice for users pointing out obstacles, parking positions and all the usual aviation paraphenalia. Long gone are the days when Peel was promising us a commercial Heliport in exchange for digging up the runway...but, eh,who knows?

Simples!!! Only that part which is now designated as the Heliport is in the Green belt...the rest ( the runway) is outside that area! Special permission was given for the terminal and associated buildings to be erected...but they still remain in a designated area and further development is prohibited...until such time as the Green belt might be redefined

So basically, we will end up with a heliport that no one uses, to put it simple?

If you see my earlier post you will note that the Business Park ( who, in simple terms, own the Heliport) have issued a notice for users...so one might presume that there must be some other traffic. NETS were due to open an emergency helicopter service based at the Heliport for new-born babies with severe medical problems but, so far as I can tell ,that's all gone very quiet.
According to the notice there are no re-fuelling facilities nor fire and rescue equipment available...which might be the reason why some recent medevac cases ,destined for Sheffield Hospitals, have had to use DSA.

What ever happened to the possibility of the new helicopter for the new born babies that was proposed? Not heard anything to say this as either being withdrawn or is still going ahead. Just seems to have gone quiet.

I recently heard from NETS... who have no helicopter and are still raising funds...so yet another disappointment for SCH and, presumably, Sheffield Business Park!

Is there still the helipad opposite the Childrens Hospital, in the entrance to Weston Park?

Is there still the helipad opposite the Childrens Hospital, in the entrance to Weston Park? The big "H" is still painted outside Weston Park Museum, AFAIK, yes. A wee walk to the Hallamshire from there, of course, but since there's no real "A&E" at the Hallamshire thats less of a problem. The Childrens still has A&E though (so the "H" seems in the right place to me).

Well, if we wish to remain the only European City of its size without any form of airport I should say we do...and there is some traffic using it. The others are for the emergency use ,solely, of medical cases...and Shirecliffe was only ever really used by the Geology Dept of the University for receiving N .Sea core samples during the development of our offshore oil and gas industries.

a Freedom of Information request reveals that the SY Police have around 1,800 movements a year and civilian use, at 2 to 4 movements a week, is minimal.
