DSA is increasing its traffic with 34,741 pax in Feb...which is up 9.8%. LBA at 145,987 was up 0.9% and MAN at 1,173,556 was up 10.1%. EMA still to report.

LBA growing far quicker year on year, MAN is clawing back its market share from LPL and I would expect EMA will continue its growth trend. Dont forget there was one extra day in February this year.

Will there be ANY retail left after that. I haven't seen the landslide spoons' open for years now, just sitting there rotting away. Are all three car hires still there? If so I am surprised...
Just out of interest, what is there landslide, in the way of Bars/Restaurants/Coffee shops and retail outlets?
Also is there any executive/business lounge?

People on here obviously don't go down there too often these days to notice what, if anything, is on offer!

So now that Flybe intend to open a base at East Midlands, and there are no flights planned from Doncaster, is this curtains for another of their airline partners?

Yes, Flybe offering DSA nothing new cannot be anything but bad news for the new(ish) owners. As it stands, there is an awful lot of mud just waiting to stick to a few of the faces in local government who actively promoted the scheme...including those who disregarded all the negative expert opinion that was being offered. Another Cambridge Airport is my best bet with MAN and EMA being re-confirmed as the City Regions two local airports!

I should reiterate. Their flights to Belfast City ended in October last year. Their token presence to Jersey will run this summer, but will not operate in the winter 12/13 season. That means another operator has shown its cards, and EMA has come out on top again. Thomson, one of the two airlines that seem to have been steady at DSA, are to re-enter the Leeds market next year, using a part based Monarch aircraft. It is said that Thomson aren't as comfy at Doncaster as we have been lead to believe. Wizz currently just have Warsaw on sale for the winter, so remains to be seen if they still intend to operate the same as this last winter.
Positives? No rumours. Monarch are set to announce some new routes by the end of May, but there is no telling where these will be to/from, so a small possibility of DSA I suppose. Easyjet strongly rumoured to be making a move back into East Midlands before long so that would preclude any return to Doncaster in the future if true. The 'link road' is now to terminate at Parrots Corner, with travellers having to use the existing road network thereafter, imagine the ensuing bottleneck.. Clearly the original plan didn't make it past the shareholders, and the business plan has been (discreetly) changed to that of providing 'increased access to employment sites in the area for developers and the workforce'.
Unless the airport can pull something out of the bag, then their passenger services will continue to steadily decline. I just dont see where growth in that sector will come from at the moment. You have to question how long the shareholders are prepared to subsidise the overheads required to operate full passenger services including full 24 hour terminal and ATCO services?
I think Lysander could be along the right lines when he gives the example of Cambridge Airport.

Flybe clearly percieve there to be a very rare opportunity at EMA, to serve the Nottingham/Derby/Leciester areas, anticipating bmi baby's demise. This isn't EMA vs DSA, it's a strategic move to pick up established markets from EMA before anyone else

It is indirectly. They could have carved out their own market from Doncaster years ago, instead they have been withdrawing due to lack of support. Now that they have decided to open a base at EMA, it seems JER will not operate for the winter season. So whilst it is not directly a 'DSA vs EMA' move, it certainly seems that Flybe are yet another airline unlikely to expand their operations at DSA.

Of Flybe's two routes out of DSA, the one to Belfast was subsidised by Yorkshire Forward and with the latter's demise and consequent withdrawal of the subsidy the airline obviously felt the route still needed subsidising to give them a return.
Humberside makes an interesting point about Flybe picking up established markets and, whilst it probably isn't exactly an EMA v DSA matter, it does show just how limiting and disadvantaged is the geographical situation of an ex RAF V bomber base ...at the edge of an established region and with the news that the proposed road will go no further than Parrot's Corner one can only wonder.....One thing is for sure, having done some research through the FoIA, and that is that the number of jobs actually created, so far, in the overall project are about as disappointing as are the passenger figures.

Monarch has announced that they will also be using EMA following the imminent demise of BMI.
