Was it some sort of demonstrator/prototype vehicle for the operation along with 520/521 which were also "odd-balls" in the fleet.

The PSV Circle records that this 522 entered service with SYPTE on 17th November 1977 but then did a demonstration tour for Hestair Dennis returning to the PTE on 17th November 1978.It ran in a blue and cream livery until March 1980 when it was repainted into fleet colours. It is recorded as withdrawn in December 1985 without passing to SYT and was with various dealers until sold to E J Reid (Cedar Coaches) of Bedford in April 1987 as their number 8. The trail is cold from there on. As the photo shows, the bus is still in full SYPTE livery when sporting the Far East windows which suggests that it may have been converted for sale by SYPTE but the sale fell through perhaps.

Clearly some confusion here about the four East Lancs bodied Dennis Dominators 521-524.
The first was 522 (SHE 722S) which was the first Dominator built and although purchased by SYPTE in order to qualify for new bus grant was the Dennis demonstrator. Consequently it was not initially in SYPTE livery and initially spent much of its time away from South Yorkshire. I understand that it was not actually the first to see service, this honour going to the second one built, Leicester 233 (UFP 233S), which is now preserved and currently undergoing an extensive restoration. It did not have a SYPTE fleet number allocated until a year or so after first appearing by which time 521 (see below) had appeared.
The second was 521 (UET 621S) which entered service in July 1978 as part of the 'famous five' trials. This was to SYPTE dual-door specification and was delivered in SYPTE livery. This one was probably more historically significant that 522 as it was the victor in the trials. As a result Dennis were able to re-establish themselves as serious contenders in the bus market and Leyland gained another nail in their coffin.
The third and fourth were an order originally placed by Blue Line / Reliance inherited by SYPTE when those companies were taken over in 1979. Revisions were made to the specifications and the pair were delivered in 1980 as 523/4 (FHL 323/4V).
Returning to 522, I would agree with oldrowley that as the photo shows the bus in full SYPTE livery when sporting the Far East windows this suggests that it may have been converted for a sale by SYPTE but the sale fell through.
