As the title says, the purchase of the First Chester and Wirral operation by Stagecoach is now under investigation by the OFT. This announcement came yesterday afternoon and can be viewed here. Be interesting to see how this pans out over the next few weeks.

What a waste of money. The overlap with existing Stagecoach operations is zero isn't it?

Suggestions are that Stagecoach are asking for the investigations to prevent another situation like Preston where everything was integrated, and later forced to divest.

Stagecoach must be getting paranoid then. Sad state of affairs when companies have become so s**t scared of competition authorities they may feel the need to refer deals with zero overlap for investigation. If Stagecoach say had one route into Wirral it might be understandable after the Preston situation, but they have none
Out of interest, are the OfT looking at the Rotala-First Redditch/Kidderminster deal? Now that is a deal the OfT need to review (it may or may not be an acceptable deal with all factors considered, but there is clearly overlap in the route networks)
