Why do some Volvo B7TLs make an absolute racket (think its the fan) and others not. Is it overheating or some want of maintenance. A lot of first sy's seem to in particular as well as B9TLs on occasion. If they start doing it does something have to be repaired or do they go back to normal when they cool off? Does it get worse with age?

Design flaw. B10M Mk 111/B10B/B10l/B10BLE/B7TL/B9s all share the same hydraulic fan drive. Usually when noisy the boost is stuck on. Cost Volvo a lot of double deck orders in London alone. Worst ones just in Sheffield are 30573 31137 37024 37029 37108 60651 60695. B7Ls are belt driven via an angle drive from the engine.

Thanks captain, interesting stuff. Always wondered when they've gone roaring past!

The Olympians used to do it too but at the front. At RO worst ones I'd say are 30563/30872/30876/37261/37263/60666

Sticking with B7TLs, what is the cause of the knocking/ticking noise some of them make? You know, the one that makes them sound like a bag of spanners, especially when taking off. I don't think I've ever heard a B7L do it, and as far as I know, B7Ls have the exact same engine as a B7TL, only difference is the vertical layout in a B7L.

Exhaust manifolds either cracked or gaskets going which also is the cause of the blackened engine doors and rears.

Noticed over the past few days/weeks that RO 60741 starts the day with a lovely clean rear and then finishes with a lovely black one, mainly around the panel gaps of the engine door. (its not grit, happens on dry days) When on the power it billows black smoke very badly. However, no bag of spanners sound, and can hear the turbo whistle up and down quite throatily. It's very very underpowered... Would cause of that be the same? Or plain buggered B7?
