Even the smaller aircraft, Embraers, Fokkers and the like would need to be well utilized, in most cases on at least a 2xdaily rotation. Seat costs would need to be high to cover operating costs and generate higher yield to make such routes viable. Doncaster alone could not justify those flights, it is Sheffield passengers that would be key to any routes success. Unfortunately for Doncaster Airport, Sheffield passengers have become well accustomed to using bigger airports that are not too far away, they provide key connectivity through high frequencies at far more competitive prices.
The KLM Humberside operation is pretty solid, though not exactly set in stone. However, the key to it's success is the offshore oil and gas, petro-chemical and shipping trade. Humberside is central to all of that, is easy to drop into from the airways thus saving fuel, and is pretty far from Manchester airport by road and rail. They can therefore pick from a fairly large pool of frequent fliers who are prepared to pay a premium for the service..
Can Doncaster really offer this to Sheffield passengers?
