Noticed yesterday the driver got off at Sheffield Station and changed the points manually to change to opposite track as obviously thats where there terminating.
Thought to myself thats a big responsibility! Does the driver then have to get off again to change them back after swapping tracks?

Nope, sprung loaded so the next tram inbound can 'push' them over, then driver gets out to change them to head to the City Centre.

During engineering works at certain locations its standard think all trams turning at gleadless town end are changed manually indeed there appears to be someone there all the time to do this.

Also, all trams have a point bar/iron equipped in each cab. Most common use of them however is to prop the cab door open!

I once read a notice in the drivers compartment warning against the practice ...because the air conditioning in the cab is interfered with if the doors are open....Meanwhile, lesser mortals sweat!

I once read a notice in the drivers compartment warning against the practice ...because the air conditioning in the cab is interfered with if the doors are open....Meanwhile, lesser mortals sweat! The Air Con only works when cab door and the saloon door are shut, if either is open then it wont come on. It's there to save on the gasses in the Air Con system. Most drivers prefer to open the door however, except for if they are driving 110. When the door is open, the air circulates much better than just the waft you get from the Air Con. 110 has the boxes on the roof though (which I helped fit one end!) and when it's working, it becomes a fridge in the cab! Such an improvement over the old system! This isn't interlocked with the doors though and instead runs all the time unless turned off on the control board to the right of the drivers seat.

Points can be operated by drivers or conductors, but the driver must be satisfied that the point blades are fully over at manual crossovers such as at SHS, BIL but not at ones with detection such as CAT, GLT etc.
After a crossover it is normal for any tram after to pass through trailing points at low speed so as not to destroy them. At GLT both sets have to be changed as they are non trailable power points that would be destroyed if pushed over by wheels - at any speed.
Kind regards,
Aidan.
