Hi. As a young un' I always remember County and Mexborough & District liveried YTC buses. I know those companies were acquired by Yorkshire Traction many years ago but what was the point of keeping the names and liveries on some buses? Were they a nod to the past like todays retro liveries? They weren't applied to one bus though. They also didn't seem to be kept to just one route either. County buses turned up on Barnsley town services for example and on the 235 one day a duty could be run by a YTC livery then the next day a County bus.

Not complaining. It made Barnsley bus station colourful. YTC alone had the poppy red livery, M&D, County, Fastlink, Townlink etc.

Rawmarsh buses were Mexborough & Swinton Huddersfield buses were County Motors Guess if one broke down in Barnsley, or was in for work, then they may have used it.

But both Waterloo and Rawmarsh weren't all County/Mexborough & District. no they usually had one at each depot just like theses modern times Whilst they may not have been the whole allocation at each depot painted, it was certainly a good proportion of them. There were about 10 National 2s in Mexborough & Swinton. County Motors was carried on Olympians, MetroRiders (with Summer Wine Minibus branding) & MetroBuses (both YTC Mk 2s, and the 5 ex WMPTE Mk 1s)

County Motors was orignally jointly owned by YTC, West Riding and a third company, I think East Midland

County livery was also carried on the MK2 national. County carried on the 245-247 (LN2) plus a number of deckers.

But both Waterloo and Rawmarsh weren't all County/Mexborough & District. No, pre-"deregulation" i believe there was 1 doubledecker County and 1 singledecker Mexborough liveried 'nostalgia' buses .. the County bus had the anniversary of that company emblazoned on the side as I recall... Added to that there were a fair few YTC Huddersfield buses that carried MetroBus Yorkshire Traction logo similar to MetroBus WYPTE, West Riding, Yorkshire(Woollen district) and West Yorkshire(Road Co.) on the side etc... infact 2 or 3 Huddersfield Tracky buses were green and white probably ex MetroBus WYPTE buses with Yorkshire Traction stickers put over the WYPTE ... After "deregulation" there were quite a few of both County Motors and Mexborough&Swinton(Traction) in the same style but different colour livery of the post denationalised YTC buses . Nevertheless I'd guess over 80 or 90% of YTC buses in Rawmarsh and Waterloo were red ...

Nevertheless I'd guess over 80 or 90% of YTC buses in Rawmarsh and Waterloo were red ... Pre- deregulation there were various anniversaries commemorated with heritage liveries. Post deregulation there was an attempt to ensure that traditional names were not used by competitors and the easiest way was to use those names as the ownership of them is not enough, you also have to use them. As for the Tracky buses etc in PTE livery, they were not ex WYPTE buses, it was part of the many PTE's quest for world dominance (one of the driving forces behind deregulation) as buses in the north east were painted in TWPTE livery at the behest of that organisation. The west yorkshire ones were very late in the day with buses being painted whilst the powers resulting in denise of the PTE's were going through parliament. It was clear that the PTE's days were numbered but they still insisted on the repaints.
