imgur.com/anF3yifAnyone have any idea what this was doing at Meadowhall tram stop today and what it was used for? It seemed to attract a lot of attention as 4 or 5 people took photos of it

I believe they are doing the works overnight in sections, cos its only been stabled at Meadowhall between 05:30 and Midnight. However I could be wrong and how did it get onto the Tram Tracks?

I'm not really an expert in any area of transport tbh but I can imagine the supertram depot has craneage that's normally used on the trams so it was transported on a flatbed then put onto the tracks at the depot. I can imagine the track width between trams/trains being the same, hence the tram train being possible

Just a bit weird that they left it there today instead of it being locked up inside or at least at the depot. It's not exactly far from meadowhall to the depot and it's not like the tracks were unusable

I reckon it could be so it doesn't get in conflict with any tram movements, maybe

Its a track tamping machine en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamping_machineThey basically pack ballast under the tracks, the state of the ballast on the single line approaching Meadowhall was beginning to impact on the ride quality so this machine has been hired in to do essential track maintenance work on nights. During the day when not in use the Tamper is stabled in the platform the Purple route would normally use (the Purple route is suspended during the rail replacement work between City and Gleadless).

The Volker Beaver Lightweight Tamper seen at Meadowhall is capable of jacking itself up and presumably lowering its self down onto a suitable (possibly dedicated) lorry. Anyone seen anything that might fit the bill in the depot? A picture is available at www.volkerrail.co.uk/dynamics/modules/SFIL0200/view.php?fil_Id=6577Or Google beaver tamper volkerrail and download the pdf

I'm guessing they have more beavers than trucks/flatbeds so the trucks are used for more than 1 piece of equipment
