To the side lf the A6178 near premier inn meadowhall/Sheffield there's an old train line which would've previously gone over the road, but the track has now been lifted. Anyone know what it was used for??
It used to connect up to the track beside the tramline.

Looking at it the line looks to have connected the Outokumpu site and the Tinsley Line today, Tinsley Yard back then was busy so a lot of traffic in and out, to the mainline between Sheffield & Meadowhall at Attercliffe sidings where the Euro Metel Recycling place is. The sidings there by the Royal Mail site is rather large and could back then have been used to run trains around. I can't confirm anything though.

Do you know where it ran to after it went over the road (i presume it went over the road), as it looks like a precarious position for a siding?

Does this answer your question (1955)? 99.gif (315.6 KB)

I believe so. My interpretation of it is that the line ran over the road and joined up with what I believe is the line that currently serves meadowhall interchange

Yes. That's what I see. And I presume the now derelict section of line was ultimately replaced by new links and junctions onto the Woodburn Junction <> Rotherham (Cent.) route, which are all still in situ, but are not present on the 1955 map.

You can just about still see the sleepers from the road if you're on the 69 Rotherham bound. It'd be nice to actually go up there and trace it back to the old junction

Many years ago probably 1980s I attended an open day at a "railway museum" - this was just near the railway station, not a museum as such it seemed to be a load of old carriages and locomotives parked up where space allowed. on part of an old branch line to Blackburn S.Yorks. ? (I think there was an open day at Sheffield bus museum the same time) Sort of a work in progress. There were plans to build a small museum and short running line, though it did appear the line was crammed full I intended to revisit but the next time I looked all the railway stock had gone. Anyone know anything about this? Was it anything to do with Sheffield bus museum or Elsecar light railway?

Nothing to do with elsecar or SBM.

If it's the line I presume your talking about it appeared to continue parallel with the current lines and then crossed over Deep Ln (up until a year or 2 ago when they resurfaced the road you could still see the railway line crossing the road-it was a level crossing), just at the other side of Deep Ln (heading away from Meadowhall) there used to be remains of some old station and/or signal box of something.
I don't believe this structure stands today though-when I saw it it would have been about 5 or 6 years ago and it was in a bad state due to vandalism etc.

No offense intended to anyone here but I'm actually rather surprised that OP didn't use Google Maps - the alignment of the track and where the trackbed used to sit from leaving the mainline to joining the "Tinsley Triangle" on the entrance to Tinsley Yard is still visible - it looks to me that the bridge which the X78 passes underneath closest to Meadowhall is also a remnant from this line too. What is a shame however is that it doesn't look like it'd be viable to walk down - the track which is still in situ on the Tinsley side of Sheffield Road sadly runs alongside factories before reaching Network Rail property - and it looks as if its the same situation with what is left of the trackbed on the other side too sadly.

Regarding the South Yorkshire Railway Preservation Society's site. If he was asking what line it was (and he wasnt) you might be able to see the old formation of the South Yorkshire Railways Blackburn Valley line to Barnsley via Ecclesfield and Wombwell on Google Earth and there was a branch off to link it to their own line through Elsecar part of which now forms the Elsecar preserved railway. Part of the line where the preservation project was sited was lost under the car park for the travel lodge near the Barrow Road bridge, but the original formation still exists as a footpath from Meadowhall station to the aforementioned bridge. The preservation Society moved to Barrow Hill in 2004 and most of the trackbed was made into a cycleway shortly after. Meadowhall & Wincobank station still stands.

I think we're talking about two different lines here - my response was (albeit rather delayed compared to some other responses) to the orignal post at the top of the thread, as it's something which I've been researching for a couple of weeks now since stumbling across the line myself, and not regarding the question which was asked later. Apologies for any confusion.

goo.gl/maps/9BT1qpkUsgF2Google Maps Streetview showing the tracks crossing Deep Lane before it was resurfaced. goo.gl/maps/mrJBgPxJPL22In this image (dated June 2011) you can see the building I was talking about. Certainly looks like an old station and from what I recall there was a platform. Cheers.
