Interesting but not surprising that the three "heavyweights" of British public transport have gone for this franchise (Abellio also considered it). I've always thought Stagecoach have done a pretty reasonable job with it so I wouldn't be disappointed if they were to win again. From a South Yorkshire point of view, I can't imagine we'll see much change. We might see them get the 3rd path between Sheffield and Manchester if the Hope Valley capacity scheme is delivered which could help ease overcrowding but other than that, maybe new trains on Sheffield-St Pancras and possibly new ones on Liverpool-Norwich.

I wouldn't really say we need new trains to be honest. They're only around 10-15 years old, and while extra carriages could be helpful, the 222's could still be good for quite awhile in my opinion

As the government dismissed a few years ago adding an additional coach to the meridians with a pantograph.......

The 222s would likely find a home at CrossCountry should they get replaced anyway.

I am now 74 and have been awaiting electrification of the MML for too many years to remember. I doubt I shall see it in my life time but having travelled on the 222s a few times I reckon they aren't in the same league as the ancient HS125s.( which, when new, I once proudly showed off to a German visitor as an example of just how advanced was our nationalised system) The222's may accelerate faster but I find them too cramped for comfort...especially on a busy service.

Just travel on the few services that are diagrammed to use a HST if possible

That's fine if you can pick and choose your times. Mostly we have time constraints!
