HS2 is now under construction between London and Birmingham - whatever anyone thinks about it good or bad. I support HS2 generally - but it probably had a lucky escape being signed off before Covid-19.
HS2's new business case has now removed the Sheffield Midland stops from the Birmingham to Leeds trains, they were on the previous version.....and supposed to form 2 of the 4 Sheffield-Leeds NPR trains, for those familiar with the plan. That means Sheffield is left with only its London HS2 trains and nothing northwards. Can't see how the Stonebroom Spur can be justified in that scenario - trains could stick on the Alfreton line from Chesterfield to East Midlands Hub. Also means thst Sheffield are planning to spend £1.5bn on a station masterplan, switching the ring road and tram tracks - for more or less the same number of trains as today. A problem?!
Haven't seen this mentioned anywhere - but feels like an unravelling.
If HS2 is - in fact - going to happen fully, a route through South Yorkshire with no trains stopping - aside from 1 or 2 an hour to London - would be a really poor outcome. Go back to Meadowhall or Sheffield Victoria ?

Go back to Meadowhall or Sheffield Victoria ? Sadly, despite the insane plans from Sheffield council, there has never been a sensible case for making the branch line diversion to the City. The best outcome for the Region ( The one it is supposed to benefit) would be to have it, as planned, going by Meadowhall. Sadly the egos of our beloved council coupled with their delusions of Sheffield's global importance have created a situation where it will become even more of a backwater. I know I keep saying that politicians ( especially local ones) should keep their noses out of public transport. Maybe because they keep proving the point with depressing regularity.
