Look at buses in certain areas. They have been doing that for ages.

Stagecoach are doing the same so I assume all companies will be. It's definitely needed on some routes but I agree there will surely be some arguments as a result

I felt sorry for the driver on the 20 I was on yesterday who was having to turn passengers away because his Streetlite had seventeen (I think?) passengers on board - despite the fact that there were clearly at least a dozen empty seats at the back (I don't think anyone was sitting beyond the rear wheels) - because a couple of families had taken about ten seats near the front of the bus
It's not for the driver to have to get out of their cab and force passengers to spread apart (especially when it's families with young kids) but at the same time, prospective passengers were getting annoyed at stops because they could see that the rear of the bus was empty yet were being told there was no room for more people
One of those situations whereto driver is following First's guidelines, and First are following the Government's guidelines, but he ends up taking abuse from passengers because he's doing his best to follow the rules (and there'd be letters of complaint to the Star if the capacity of "seventeen" was ignored - I'm sure this change can't come soon enough for staff who are doing a hard enough job with the driving and the passenger interations (and dealing with a lot of motorists who've not done much driving over the past fifteen months, so their road skills are a little rusty!), without constantly checking how many people have got on and off like some annoying maths test!

There are 2 issues here. 1 Groups should be counted as1 "bubble" and loadings adjusted accordingly. 2 The machine takes care of the counting but, certainly the stagecoach one can lag by at least a minute. Not useful at a busy stop. Not sure how quickly the first one updates. As for the loadings, some routes in Sheffield have been observed by Me running well over the advisory capacity for several weeks now.

To be honest I never much liked it even before the pandemic and less so now. It will be worse when people don't wear a mask or wear one improperly.
On a slightly different topic it will happen more frequently when Deregulation is scrapped. I've never quite understood anti dereg people complaining about spare capacity on buses. Personally I think this has been a plus not a minus of dereg especially with shopping bags.
