Interesting to see the proposals from SYMCA have now gone live for both the general and school bus network from 23rd July 2023. These changes, if approved will see the full tendered bus network undergo a review, with some new & revised services thrown in. What remains to be foreseen is if operators will bid for the work and if they will all be approved. I'd imagine budgets are already constrained...
Some highlights of the 300 tendered services that are currently live for submissions from operators:
4 (Rotherham - Cedar Drive): 2 options are available, with one of the options being this service would replace current 117. Bramley, Broadlands would be served by revised service 10. Service 4 would then provide a combined 30 minute service alongside service 3 between Ravenfield Common (Cedar Drive) and Flanderwell, with service 3 running as now via Markfield Drive and service 4 running via Woodlaithes and then as service 117 into Rotherham. Interesting to see in Eastwood, there is an option for non EURO VI compliance that would serve Doncaster Road rather than Fitzwilliam Road.
7 (Barnsley - Hoyland): Improved operation span Mon-Sat daytimes, with most journeys extended through to Rotherham via Wentworth & Greasbrough.
10/10A (Sheffield - Manor Park): Hourly service on the former routes, with a change of termini to Sheffield Interchange.
21 (Rotherham - Harthill): 2 options are available, with 1 removed from Whiston and running direct along Pleasley Road, if revised service 114 is approved (see 114 below).
32 (Sheffield - Northern General Hospital): New proposed service, almost following the former 32 route. Will run along Arundel Gate and Herries Road at Wadsley Bridge to serve Sainsbury's/Kilner Way Retail Park. Will now terminate at Northern General Hospital rather than Firth Park.
108/109 (Rotherham - Rawmarsh): New proposed evening/Sunday service to replace the Stagecoach 8/9.
114 (Rotherham - Whiston): New proposed hourly service, running as was to Tennyson Road, then via Middle Lane South, Chaucer Road, Herringthorpe Valley Road and around the former Whiston loop that service 26 most recently did. Dovedale Road estate wouldn't be served, with bus stops on Herringthorpe Valley Road utilised instead.
217 (Swinton - Wombwell): New proposed hourly service between Swinton Interchange, Newhill, Wath Bus Station then same route as service 223 now to Wombwell. X54 (Sheffield - Harthill): All journeys now operate via Parkway Markets and Handsworth/Waverley. Appears to co-ordinate with service X74 at peak times Mon-Fri through Parkway Markets.
X74 (Sheffield - Tinsley Park): Extended to/from Shepcote Lane with an improved half-hourly provision at peak times Mon-Fri.

Do you have a link you could share to see the full details, please? I have submitted a freedom of information request today, to try and obtain this info in full. Seems very hard to get hold of if your not registered as a company interested in bidding for work. I do however think it will be interesting to see just how many areas of SY need subsidy. It is important to know which bus services are not commercially viable, so that we can see proposed routes and judge how essential they are. I have also asked for details of all current live contracts, their start and end dates, and how much support the receive. This information has been freely released in the past. And has in fact been published on the old SYPTE website up to 2021. It will also be interesting to look back at the data to see how many of the tenders are accepted in July, as new timetables are punished in July. Under the act they have twenty working days to respond to the request. Watch this space.

Many thanks. It is a pity public bodies, like SYMCA and the traffic commissioners, are not more transparent with the general public. It is a pity SYPTE can’t move beyond rehashing unnecessarily tortuous routes like 32, instead of providing something similar but more useful, like the old 17 direct from City to Foxhill to Meadowhall.

Yes, they keep giving an indication that money is tight. Maybe true, but why oh why are they determined to run a service at peak times like the x7. The X1 is slower yes, but if you are so short of money why run am x7? There are surly more important routes that should be running where there is literally no alternatives available. Parts of Kimberworth have no service at all really effecting the elderly. the 21 service really needs to be a decker in my view and access to Rotherham hospital needs to be improved.

It’s also down to what operators want to run. A peak only service may be more desirable to some operators than an all day service because it means they can work it around existing work such as schools, meaning they don’t need to get more drivers and vehicles to run those contracts which costs them money

I just think that sometimes SYMCA as the contractor, has different priorities to the average passenger. For example a rhetorical question, lets say the 137 is subsidised by SYMCA between Rotherham and Sheffield. Surly the 137 could be extended to cover the parts that the 138 use to do? Many older and disabled people cannot walk that far to the nearest alternative stop and are therefore isolated. Surly the 137 could be extended at minimal cost and time, and divert slightly and cover the isolated areas of the 138? Would an operator turn a contact (that they presumably wanted) just for the sake of having to do an extra bit in the middle? Maybe they would but apparently the 138 as a separate route had no bids.

A lot of it is to do with timings. That small diversion may well mean that a return trip can not be done in the same time meaning an extra vehicle is required and if the operator has one and the staff to drive it thats fine. If not they may well turn it down and run what they can rather than stretching themselves too far.

SYMCA approved the tender awards at a meeting last Friday, does anyone know what services have been included?
For example last October Sheffield tendered services 10/10a and M17 were suspended until further notice due to no contract being awarded, areas like Bradway lost their evening service due to withdrawal of commercially operated services which weren't replaced and likewise areas like Loxley/Wisewood losing their Sunday service.

Putting services out to tender is only the first stage in a long process. The next and more important stage is finding someone to run them. Just because a tender is put out, there is no guarantee the service will ever run.

Mon-Sat daytime contracts have been budgeted and signed off. This will see a return of all contracts that have been tendered, if operators can deliver. From what I'm told there was only 1 LOT that didn't receive a bid for any work and that was the new Askern - Norton M51 shuttle service. Understand negotiations are underway for an enhanced 51 service instead. So, subject to operators having enough resource we should see the return of services such as 114 Rotherham - Dovedale Road, 138 Rotherham - Kimberworth Park, 10/10A Sheffield - Manor Park/Manor Top, 32 Sheffield - Northern General Hospital and M17 Jordanthorpe - Dore, alongside various other services. Evening/Sunday tenders are apparently sill under discussions and the initial signs aren't great. Revised contracts went out last week and were due back on Monday 1yr and 2yr prices, which clearly states either there isn't enough operators interested or there isn't the sufficient budget available.

I think it is as much to do with who is prepared to work for SYMCA / SYPTE. I believe some operators will not do so at any price. Some will work with them but want a higher price than can be accommodated in the budget. The days of operators working for peanuts seems to be over.

Will the extension of the 2 pound rising to 2 pounds fifty single fayre scheme make any difference to which services will be kept and when they run does anyone think? They now have funding till Nov 24. On that basis will more routes operate in the evening and Sundays?
