If you live in the north of Sheffield, you have the 18, 95,95a and Yellow Supertram all taking you to Meadowhall but in the South West there is just the 65. Let's face it the city centre isn't up to much these days so most people go to Meadowhall. You know, I hadn't thought of it that way. To me it seemed daft for the 65 to extend to Meadowhall and the time would be better used giving a more frequency service to Buxton. There are plenty of options to change on to at the Interchange, I guess the question is whether a direct service trumps a more frequency option that needs a change of bus.
A lot of the cuts in Chesterfield seem to be on routes that duplicate a main road then split to serve smaller areas. The focus seems to be on not over-providing on the busy corridor at the expense of reduced frequencies away from that corridor. Personally, I'd rather have a more frequent local bus that meant I had to change in to another, but maybe someone has done market research to the contrary?
I almost wonder if we'd be better going back to the days of a minibus running around the estates feeding in to longer distance routes on the main roads. Heck, even add an element of DRT where it can be diverted to areas off-route. Would save on vehicle and fuel costs but not on driver costs, but might get passenger numbers up as it would be more visible in more areas?

I wrote out a detailed reply to this but I refreshed the page, by accident and lost it! The business model for buses in our area is generally ok. But the finer details need looking at. Flagship services that mainly stick to main roads: we have and have always had these and they work well, but some need to be extended to Meadowhall, as the city centre is rubbish these days, Meadowhall sees high footfall all days of the week for shopping, dining and leisure. Here, there and everywhere services: We have the 18, which is a great circular and business wise, ticks many boxes whilst being sparing on resources. We need some more services like these, and ones that provide direct links from all areas of the city to parkland and hospitals. We need more buses using the on site bus stops at Hallamshire and NGH. Feeder Services: Something that has been established with servies such as the 55 to Crystal Peaks from Frecheville. These are useful links to areas that don't warrant a direct service to the city centre and provide the customer with a wider choice of destination. Because of the short distance nature of these services, they can be provided using minimal resources (usually only one bus and one driver all day) and can bring footfall to busier flagship services. As I said on another thread, a minibus from Killmarsh to Halfway P&R and then Morrison's would give Killamarsh an indirect link to Sheffield, but also a handy one for the Supertram and 120. Other places this could be rolled out would be a direct service from Hunter's Bar to Hillsborough Interchange, via Brocco Bank, Hallamshire Hospital round about, Nile Street, Crookesmoor Road, all areas of the Upperthorpe/Langsett Estate and Morrison's Car Park. One Minibus, perhaps a Wheel Forward Streetlite per hour would do it and with it linking major attractions, such as Morrison's, Hillsborough Exchange, Endcliffe Park and serving the densely populated Upperthorpe Estate, I can see them creating a niche for high patronage and a considerable profit.

Meadowhall isn't as busy as it used to be and is linked with Sheffield City Centre by the tram as well as buses like the X1, X17 and X78 which provides very frequent connections at both Arundel Gate interchange and Sheffield Interchange for those arriving from the other side of the city and Derbyshire. Bus operators are short of drivers without wasting that resource on running even more buses to Meadowhall.
The 218 has two jobs really - linking Sheffield with Bakewell and Chatsworth (which is where the money is made) and also providing the alternative route to Totley - on parts of this route it is the only bus service - for example on Psalter Lane and Abbey Lane. The half hourly service is quite tightly and Cleverley scheduled to make the most of the buses available for this route and ideally needs a spare bus and driver to jump in when delays occur either due to traffic congestion or large numbers of passengers boarding slowly! Unfortunately the reality of late is what actually happen is trips get cancelled or turned short because like most operators they simply don't have enough drivers available. An extension of the route to Meadowhall would make these problems worse and in reality attract very few additional passengers to justify it.
I'm afraid where we are right now is one where we've seen First cut their network back quite ruthlessly to a level that they can run reliably with the resource available, other operators quite cautious about taking on extra work given resourcing issues and tendered evening services about to be decimated due to the available funding not being able to stretch far enough, especially with the skyrocketing cost of operating buses. We need to be protecting the existing network first and foremost - although perhaps reflecting changes in demand post-covid - and restoring services to areas with no coverage - for example Loxley and Wisewood have no Sunday service, Bradway no evening service etc - rather than fantasy new routes or extensions in areas that already have buses that cater for the proven demand.

A service from Chapeltown to Meadowhall would be nice without having to change in firth Park or relying on the train the last direct route I can remember was the 72m with tates travel.

A service from Chapeltown to Meadowhall would be nice without having to change in firth Park or relying on the train the last direct route I can remember was the 72m with tates travel. There used to be the 37 Yorkshire Terrier, it ran from Burncross right through to Meadowhall. I do think there is a market for a direct service between there, especially if they can undercut train fares for that journey.

I wouldn't call them fantasy routes. Does Killamarsh have a bus service running to Morrison's and the park and ride, ameneties that are close by? Does Holbrook have a service? The way you describe Meadowhall makes it sound like it's in the decline, quite the opposite. In recent years, the centre has expandes with the new climbing exhibition, the outdoor attractions in the summer and high end jewellers such as Breightling and Omegle taking up residence there. Do you really think the residents of Tinsley or Wincobank can afford to shop there? The 218 runs through upper Totley, Beauchief, Parkhead, some of the most affluent parts of the city. The X17 has already proven that there is a demand from southern suburbs to Meadowhall. If you have a network that provides a convenient, direct service, people will come and use it and spend their cash. If you have to walk/change at bus stops etc, then you may as well get a taxi and it won't be much dearer if there is more than one of you. I agree that the 31 to Wisewood and Loxley should run on Sundays. Every area should have a bus service 7 days a week. They are cutting their nose off to spite their face as a dependable service that runs every single day will get people out of their cars and get coins in the cash register of the buses.

The 'other' Stagecoach Yorkshire have revised some of the registrations they submitted just over a week ago, to withdraw some Sunday services. I wonder if that means there were errors, or if funding has been cut...
Is the timetable data available for services that have been registered? Bustimes only seem to go a couple of weeks ahead.

Some Stagecoach changes from the 29th of October from Blink.
Chesterfield
Following a last minute change by Derbyshire County Council, the extra Sunday journeys we intended to introduce on a number of routes will now not happen.

On Sundays, service 5 will continue to run between Chesterfield and Newbold only, starting at Rose Hill and terminating at Cavendish Street. 15 – Timetable revised to improve punctuality. 16 – Timetable revised to improve punctuality. 25 – Frequency increased from every 60’ to every 30’ Monday to Saturday daytimes, funded by DCC BSIP. Following driver feedback, the 50 will run via West Street instead of Ravencar Road (service 50a provides an alternative) and via Sheffield Road instead of Windmill Greenway (service 120 provides an alternative). In Old Whittington, service 50a will operate direct via High Street rather than Burnbridge Road, Ashcroft Drive and Station Lane to reduce journey times and to give parts of High Street a service. Good grief 21, (a hospital route) down to every two hours evenings and Sundays 22X Every 2 hours, interesting when the 136 is every 1.5 hours Service 2 linking Sheffield and Barnsley will run evenings and Sundays but infrequently. Does that mean every two hours or less? anyone know? Any news on the 22 Doncaster. I am assuming the 19A Worksop to Rotherham is staying hourly in the evenings and Sundays? Parts of this are not as bad as I feared and others are much worse! Very interesting to see the 22X cut back in the evenings and Sundays. I think it had be hoped that SSY would run one and SYMCA the other. I really does put Sheffield city centre to shame doesn't it? A city that size, a theatre complex that is quite large, and a student population and we can only manage a two hourly evening and Sunday service. People cannot give up their cars with this service provision, it's impossible. I tell you, I shall be annoyed if First start having resource issues. You bid for the work, after leaving passengers in some areas with no service, They'd better run.
