Rumours of some changes to the proposed tendered services that First have been awarded... anyone heard anything? Understand there have been several improvements offered by First, as with Stagecoach - provided on a commercial basis. This will see an uplift on some routes to hourly as per current (services 10, 15, 20, 55/56, 75/76, 95/95A, 97/98, 115, X5 etc.). The 20A/25A option as proposed by SYMCA now won't occur and will run as current. 20 will run every 65-70 minutes with 2 vehicles and 25 will run every 120 minutes with 1 vehicle. Understand service 1 in North Sheffield also now won't happen, with every other 1A extending through to High Green to provide a hourly service.

Good grief 21, (a hospital route) down to every two hours evenings and Sundays 22X Every 2 hours, interesting when the 136 is every 1.5 hours Service 2 linking Sheffield and Barnsley will run evenings and Sundays but infrequently. Does that mean every two hours or less? anyone know? Any news on the 22 Doncaster. I am assuming the 19A Worksop to Rotherham is staying hourly in the evenings and Sundays? Parts of this are not as bad as I feared and others are much worse! Very interesting to see the 22X cut back in the evenings and Sundays. I think it had be hoped that SSY would run one and SYMCA the other. I really does put Sheffield city centre to shame doesn't it? A city that size, a theatre complex that is quite large, and a student population and we can only manage a two hourly evening and Sunday service. People cannot give up their cars with this service provision, it's impossible. I tell you, I shall be annoyed if First start having resource issues. You bid for the work, after leaving passengers in some areas with no service, They'd better run. With regards to the comment about First, its difficult to say until we've also seen their changes - remember all the evening tendered services are being reduced by SYMCA so the new evening routes First have won contracts for may be resource that has been cut elsewhere, therefore not needing any more drivers than now. One positive change should be to TM Travel which should be able to provide a more reliable Mon-Sat daytime service going forward. There will only be 3 vehicles out on the network after 21:00 Mon-Sat. 9A/42 - 1 vehicle resource (SYMCA ringfenced until March 2025) 30A - 1 vehicle resource (SYMCA ringfenced until March 2025) 218 - 1 vehicle resource (BSIP ringfenced until March 2026). This should help alleviate problems and potential risk of contracts being revoked for non compliance.

All of a sudden, like I said in another thread, services can be run commercially on a by-hourly basis by the operators. I never felt that the X1 could be reduced to every two hours to Maltby during Sunday daytime or in the evenings, I wonder if First are actually trying to compete with Stagecoach service enhancements in Rotherham. How long has subsidy been being paid when some services could and possibly allegedly should have been run at the operators own financial risk. I know until things come out officially it's hard to tell, but if all the above services are maintained at hourly that will be good news, but surly it proves that operators have been playing a very good game on some routes asking for subsidy, leaving passengers worrying if they would have a service or not by threatening to pull out of a service unless SYMCA paid them to run it. I brought up at a public meeting with the Mayor that I didn't feel that all services needed subsidy, someone agreed with me, it looks like we MAY have been proven right. Driver numbers have been an issue, but this is for the operators to sort out not SYMCA. Some services were lost because of driver numbers, but surly not all?

Isn't this interesting? All of a sudden, like I said in another thread, services can be run commercially on a by-hourly basis by the operators... I think some operators have come to expect subsidy and favour services where they can 'persuade' the local authority to give them some.
Over the border in Derbyshire Stagecoach have decided the part of the 90 out to Walton is to be sacrificed to extend it the other side to Creswell - with BSIP money. They use poor loadings to justify the cuts - odd that every 90 I saw on Chatsworth Road today was well loaded.
Sometimes councils are too keen to dangle the financial carrot without considering the knock-on effects. The X17 extension to Wirksworth for instance stretched things too far resulting in local cancellations - many being on the 90. Had anyone at DCC stopped to ask if Stagecoach could actually provide that extension without impacting other services then things might have worked out differently. While you can't deny it, and the Peak Sightseer, have been successful, they have taken resources which left other routes short, leading to local impacts and probably reducing the viability of other services by losing passengers to the car.

Couldn't agree more. I don't think the traffic commissioner will investigate this but they should. Wouldn't be quite so annoyed if they actually ran a high percentage of their services,1. on time and 2. Stopped cancelling them but they don't They must think we were born yesterday. There is more money in the industry than they all let on. Time to introduce large fines for cancelations due to driver shortages, and poor punctuality, caused by shocking timetabling and poor management.

The 56 going 2 hourly all day on Sunday is very poor. Interesting that First are taking on some evening 86 services, I was not expecting that. It's been many years since First ran a bus through Burncross. All in all, not as bad as predicted. The 56 is pretty shocking but I suppose there is the 218 a short walk away at Nether Edge and the Supertram (Hyde Park) at the Wybourn end. I am glad that the 11 has survived. The 81 going two hourly in the evening is simply not on. Dore and Stannington will really struggle. The 82 could probably cope being 2 hourly. The X5 going 2 hourly is also poor. It always carries a heavy load whenever I've caught it. It's not like Dinnington has a railway service either. There's a thought, possible Tram Train extension to Dinnington? Would probably do better than Parkgate. 😉

I’m surprised that the 16:51 and 18:09 43As from town still run into Lowedges , I’d assumed that it would be off peak so the vehicles would be used to beef up Dronfield capacity at rush hour Whilst I understand the need to publish something rather than nothing, the rush to punt out basic timetables without route maps is a shame when there’s been no route changes The 56 is pretty shocking but I suppose there is the 218 a short walk away at Nether Edge and the Supertram (Hyde Park) at the Wybourn end I suppose that’s the problem that a route like the 56 has now It doesn’t run THAT far out of the city centre to make some bus journeys very worthwhile At the eastern end, Anyone able bodied/ fit is going to be able to walk to the relatively frequent tram/ 24/25 or the frequent routes up City Road (that said, Maltravers Terrace requires a certain level of fitness for getting back home after wards!) At the southern end, Anyone able bodied/ fit is going to be able to walk to the relatively frequent routes along Abbeydale Road (or, as you say, the 218) Even if it ran every five minutes, anyone who pays for their own tickets is going to feel like paying two pounds minimum isn’t amazing value for money, but if you have to plan around waiting an hour or more then it’s even less use But then, the same can be said of two hourly services in a number of areas, leisure travel is becoming incredibly complicated and requires planning ahead, vicious circles…

I could walk from where I live around a mile or so and have a plethora of buses going all sorts of places but it usually entails a hill at one end or another. It's important to maintain some level of service that goes reasonably close to all corners of each area. Considering that the 56 is the only bus going properly in to Nether Edge 'Village' and properly serving the Wybourn Estate, it's a poor show.

The 22 and 19A are going to 2 hourly despite both being a hospital route very interesting. Some routes also staring very early Sunday morning and ending at 1am to maintain the 2 hourly frequency. Some seem daft to me.

The "Service Changes" page talks about services, such as the X5, going 2-hourly on evenings and Sundays, yet the linked timetable shows hourly. I understand changes were made quite late in the day, but this is still shambles from a customer information perspective.

The incompetence of SYMCA's senior management never ceases to amaze me. They have put up a new timetable for the 22 Doncaster, removed all the day services, just included the subsidised evening ones, and failed to mention that any Sunday service even exists. Our depot manager at Worksop is going to talk to the commercial manager tomorrow morning as it is the first he knows about it. He also said the 19A is too busy to go down to every two hours on on Sunday. They do publish some rubbish. It's about time some disciplinary written warnings were dished out. They treat passengers with absolute contempt. A complaint has gone in, I am waiting for a phone call back. If you are at all unsure, don't publish it. We do still have a Sunday and daytime service, but will frighten people and pretend it has disappeared. I wouldn't mind but they took it down when I told them, then published the same thing 2 hours later. No SYMCA, this is your fault, the information is on your site, not the operators site. Get a grip or face the consequences. How many more mistakes with I find that are so glaringly obvious. Think BEFORE you publish. And you want to take control of the network? Lord help us.
Update, it has since been taken down again, so we will watch this space!
