Having just been charged £2 to go 3 stops on a Stagecoach bus, I enquired whether they still did cheaper fares and was told not.
Quite aside from this seeming against the idea of the cap, do any operators charge less than £2 in any circumstances at the moment?

Depends on fare stages. Take 120 for example, £1.40/£1.50 from Halfway to Crystal Peaks (quite a distance), but from stop before Crystal Peaks to stop after it’s £2, even though it’s a much shorter distance and less stops.

First charge £1.40 for some journeys, e.g. Hillsborough Interchange to Walkley Road. Stagecoach used to do a £1.30 fare for three stops or so until very recently.

First used to do a "3 hops for 50p" deal where you could use any First bus in the city centre and travel 3 stops for 50 pence, this was back in the days when Haymarket was bustling and there was demand to bridge the gap between there and The Moor.
I remember before ENCTS came in, it used to be 30 pence for elders and disableds then it rose to 33 pence around 2000. Adult singles were around 65 pence with some routes having a £1 return fare. Andrew's Bus Cards were £3.95 for the week. There was also Bargain Bus which ran on route 25A from Woodhouse to Bradway and the maximum single fare was 50 pence.
Then in the 2000s, First introduced a flatbfare of £1 for all singles after 6pm, a promotion that still exists in West Yorkshire.
It was all good and proper cash of course, none of thos tapping business. I've noticed that First buses are starting to get held up when the passenger who wants to pay with card alights, as they fiddle around trying to scan it. Half the time it doesn't work and the driver calls them over to scan it on his till. It takes twice as long as it did before! The other day a man got on for a journey in the £1.40 fare zone but couldn't scan his card when he got off so will have been charged the full £2 fare. If he'd have paid with cash, he'd have been charged the correct amount. Live and learn!

Oh wow, I didn't know that. Much better than the £1 Connect bus. Isn't Connect now free?
Playing around with the Stagecoach website, it appears under £2 fares might only be available in Sheffield. Even one stop (for all the options I tried*) in Chesterfield came out at £2.
It does rather make a mockery of it being called a 'cap' - I wonder if DfT would be interested that all cheaper fares have been removed. It's also notable that Stagecoach drivers always issue tickets to the end of the route no matter how far you are going - is the rebate based on journeys made by any chance?
As an aside, do Hulleys still do the £1 fare for short journeys within Sheffield?
* The fare-finder is rather woeful, taking upwards of a minute at times to return a result...

Yep, £2 is a lot for one stop. It seems to have quietly crept up with Stagecoach. Chesterfield is quite flat too, so I imagine if someone is making a short journey e.g. from town to the retail park on Queen's Road, they will just walk, shame when companies like First can do a £1.40 short distance single and make it work. If it's any consolation, Stagecoach in Sheffield drivers are very reluctant to issue the £1.50 tickets and would rather everyone bought a £2 one. When Stagecoach first took over Terrier up here, they were known for being the cheaper bus company. How times change lol.
