Yeah, I've seen a couple Lynxes recently, one on Carterknowle Road and one at the top of Brocco Bank. I also once saw a very old-looking bus at Knowle Lane teriminus (the 87 one) back in the days before the 87 went, which could have been a Lynx but I think was even older. I also spotted the Mainline-liveried Falcon going past the Cathedral tram stop, this was last summer after the Dominators had been withdrawn.

The thing is this area is not served by first routes and therefore i think they may be sniffing around a little!
Rotherham - Doncaster via Mexborough anyone?
could MattW's predictions from earler this year be correct?

The trainers dont always go in areas that are specific route areas, an example is that from time to time learners may even be taken to other towns,,,,such as Huddersfield ect....they will use a variety of areas in order to give the learner a taste of varying road conditions and different challenges, this helps to delelop the ability to manouver the bus is difficult situations.
Trainers have no bearing on where First operate.

I quite often seem to see the trainers in Conisbrough. Maybe it's just coincidence, but do they follow the X78 route because of the variety of roads it uses, including the narrow ones in Conisbrough?

Well I'm sure I a First West Yorkshire (Lance, I think it was) trainer bus going up Shambles Street in Barnsley towards the Town End the other week. Never seen a First trainer bus in Barnsley before that day.

(its just the road between the castle and old police station which is the problem) if it was turned into a one way system it would be much easier.

No conspiracy guys. If it was in Mexborough it is probably considered a good area to learn in (variety of roads maybe or a specific hazard perhaps) or maybe, just maybe, it is considered good practice to start driving training in the trainees local area so that they can focus on the vehicle rather than the area.
I don't know what it was doing there, but i don't think a training Lynx is a spy bus now.

Not saying a spy bus though i was thinking more on the lines of testing certain routes to see what frequency First may need if they start the route. Oh and the lynx was down Hooton Roberts Hill about 30 minutes aqo.

I agree, no conspiracy whatsoever. Driver training is very different (i imagine) to route training and therefore they will take the trainee to the areas where the trainers feel is best. If that is in an area where the company doesn't normally operate, then so be it. Arriva Manchester train drivers on a regular basis around Middleton, North Manchester even though they don't operate a service within a 5 mile radius!

When I was training at Chesterfield Transport we got as far as Ollerton well on the way to Newark
