The histroy of Sheffield Tramways is very well documented, but there seems to be little written about Rotherham,(other than the constant reference to the Dolter surface colection mistake), Barnsley and even less about the Dearne Valley system.
The Derane Vally system intersets me, especialy the route it took.
Is there anyone else out there interseted in these systems and does anyone know anything about the Derane valley system.

I passed there the other day and saw them in there cleaning it all out.
I drove down through Firth Park years ago, when they were digging the road up and saw the old tack on the corner up by Barnsley Rd. This is what got me hooked on the old (PROPER) tramway system and its history.

there is quite an ammount of the sheffield tramway about still.
most of the track was left in place just covered by asphelt, saw some being removed from pond street the other week down by the hallam uni.
several poles survive, there is or was one on abbey lane near bottom of meadowhead, also on upper section firth park road near barnsley road plus one on prince of wales road.
a control box survived on church street until the new tramway was built.
question, any one know what happened to the stone from central works which proclaimed sheffield tramways.
thinking of depots most have now gone though the medical centre at holme lane uses the entrance way still and i think is called tramway medical or siimlar.
the tinsley sheds are there still aka bus museum. the depot at crookes school road has gone in last 5 years. i gather the original horse tram shed is still there at albert road heeley. tenter street disappeared under the midland bank site. would have loved to have seen that being double decked with buses upstairs.

I've seen most of the old poles..theres a set of two together in Firth Park...one on Abbeydale Road.....one just off the junction at the bottom of Meadowhead.....one on the Prince of Wales Road still with a bit of overhead hanging out and another a little further up..painted white now...and of course the "Last pole" down at the Tinsley tram sheds.
Everytime I see roadworks I always have to have a peep to see if there are any sections of track left.
I keep looking for a small length that I can fit in my vehicle and bring home but up to now all the bits I've seen are fifteen foot long!!
It would be nice to get a little bit..but then where would I put it!!
Does anyone know of any other parts of the system that are still around?
Would liked to have seen that control box.

i gather the original horse tram shed is still there at albert road heeley. This is being re developed (Sheffield speak for building flats) as we speek. Last time I passed..a week or so ago they had stared to knock parts of it down. The old archway is/was still there with the stone work....saying Sheffield Corporation Tramways. Have took some photos last year, when I first heard it was coming down. Will try to post them on here this weekend. I'm busy trying to flog them...and some others of buses from Sheffield on Ebay at the minute. Didnt realy want to but for the amount I have (and I keep taking more) it isn't practical to keep posting tons and tons. So I thought if I had a cheap disc for sale on Ebay it might be a way of showing my shots off. Dont want to "make" on them just to cover cost's but at the minute the disc dosn't seem to be shifting. *Shameless plug over*

I have a sheffield tramway map on the back page of a book somewhere... LMK if you're interested and I can send you a scan.
There was an article on the Doncaster system a few years ago in a local magazine.

Im sure I've got one somewhere too...thank you though.
I'm always suprised that there so much about Sheffield but so little about the other systems.

I saw the old tracks being ripped up on shalemoor a few weeks ago,id also though of obtaining a bit but again they were about 15 ft long,,,,too big for the roof rack,,,lol. Id thought of asking the contractor to chop a bit off for me but when i returned the track had gone.
I think a small section polished up and mounted would make an excellent momemto of the days of the sheffield trams

Went to Sandtoft on monday and was having a look roun one of the old tram car bodies they have there.
On the floor next to it were two pieces of rail...but not from Sheffield..either from Hull or Doncaster as it was the unusual "centre groove rail".
Have never seen this before. I've heard that it was used to make the ride smoother over joints in the rail.
