The history of Barnsley & District
The life, times, and liveries of Barnsley & District.
In July 1990 the Yorkshire Traction company bought the rights to services and some buses operated by Tom Jowit Travel. This company was then split into two. The first half was managed my Tom Jowit and had nothing to do with YTC, but the second part of this comany was to become a subsidiary company of Yorkhire Traction. The company was managed by Tom Jowit, and was to be renamed. The new company name was The Barnsley & District Traction Company ltd, so called because of the old name of Yorkshire Traction.
Barnsley & District (B&D) went on to become a low cost bus operating unit of YTC, and can now be found operating on many of YTC's competitve routes.
In 1990 B&D or Tom Jowit Travel, owned a few Leyland Leopards, Leyland National 1's and a couple of Mercedes Benz minibuses. In time YTC got rid of some of the older vehicles replacing them newer buses from the main YTC fleet.
B&D have only ever had a few new buses (ex demonstrator), these were new in 1995 as N registered Volvo B6's all with Alexander Dash bodies. These buses were put into Hoyland Bus livery and are normally used on the service 325 on the Hoyland and Elsecar Circulars.
June 2000 I got a photo back from the developer the other day, of Barnsley & District Leyland National 212 (EDT212V). It's livery was B&D Liv 2 (see my liveries pages for details on how I name liveries). That's ok, I wonder when it will be done up in the new livery - I was actually in the Bus station looking at the photos of this bus when it drove past me, complete in the latest livery - the lettering transfers had been scraped off, and new ones on. Thus, in by book, the bus is in a different livery. My point being, B&D have buses in the new lvery all the time, but they do not get reported as they are "painted" gradually.
August 2003 How things change. Once Barnsley & Distict hadn't had any new buses, and the buses it did have came from it's predecessor Tom Jowitt, or from the main fleet. Now, however, B&D contain no bus which has operated for the main fleet. They do however, operate the following "modern" fleet - even a couple of low floors. -
Volvo B6 (4) Ex Demonstrator Volvo B6 (6) Ex TimeLine Travel Volvo B6 (3) Ex Nottingham CT Volvo B6 (2) Ex Clarkson's (of Pontefract) LOW FLOOR Volvo B6 (7) Ex Blazefield Group Optare Delta (20) Ex Trent. Optate Solo (1) New Low Floor MCW MetroRider (1) Ex YTC - New to Ipswitch
So, we expect the MetroRider to leave the fleet shortly, leaving us with 22 Volvo's B6s (2 of which are low floor), lots (and lots) of Optare Delta's, and one Solo. A far cry from the days of National 1's.
Summer 2005
By the summer of 2005 B&D had a pretty modern fleet. Most of the fleet was made up of Volvo buses with the odd Delta. The two Clarkson low floors had been transferred to 'Tracky' whilst some Delta's were moved over to RoadCar. In their place came a handful of Low floor Volvo B10BLE's from Keighley & District for use on the 325 Barnsley-Elsecar circuit
