Yorkshire Traction operates some three hundred buses and coaches throughout South and West Yorkshire. The Company is part of the Traction Group Limited, which has its head office in Barnsley. Other bus Companies owned by the group include Barnsley and District, Yorkshire Terrier, Lincolnshire Road Car and Strathtay Transport of Dundee. The Traction Group is the sixth largest operator of bus services in the Country and the biggest, which is still privately owned.
Yorkshire Traction started in November 1902 running a fleet of trams in the Barnsley area. After the First World War these were replaced by buses and gradually the Company expanded into surrounding areas. The Company, known locally as 'Tracky' currently has depots in Barnsley, Huddersfield, Doncaster, Shafton (nr Barnsley) and Rawmarsh (nr Rotherham). In 1969 Yorkshire Traction became part of the state owned National Bus Company that was privatised in 1987 when the Company was bought by its then Directors. The acquisition of other Company's has occurred since privatisation.
In addition to running buses and coaches Yorkshire Traction owns and operates a regional chain of Travel Agencies trading under the 'Travelink' name. Although towards the end the service was poor, will miss the yorkshire traction livery
