Service 53 (First Mainline)
Serving the Sheaf Valley, Don Valley North, the 53 is one of the busiest routes in Sheffield. Service 53 is one of Sheffield oldest routes, started on almost the exact same route used today in 1960 when the Woodseats tram service ended.
It serves:
(Bradway)-Lowedges-Meadowhead-Woodseats-Meersbrook-Heeley Bottom-Lowfield-CITY-Neepsend-Owlerton-Hillsborough-Wadsley Bridge-Southey Green-Parson Cross-Ecclesfield.
The route is currently operated by Branded Volvo low floor single deckers, odd unbranded buses are used.
The frequency is every 10 minutes monday-saturday daytime and every 20 minutes evenings and sundays.
the 53 is part of first mainlines overground network and is the brown line.

The Woodseats tram route ended in 1960 NOT 1962 all the sheffield tram routes ended in October 1960. the 53 as been extended to Ecclesfield since then as it went to the school on wordsworth ave .This cahnge was around 1985 part of the north Sheffield scheme. It was extended to Bradway in the last couple of years .

upto about the mid eighties, atleast after i left woodseats in 83, the route had a twin, the 42, which ran to Fox Hill on alternate timings, it ran via Shoreham St rather than Queens Rd.
both routes were operated by Herris Rd vehicles, with the Videmat ticket machines. Usually from the batch 1601 to 1629 plus there was a further batch in the high 1600s around 1690 I think.
