Before any gossip starts circulating...
Yesterday (8th Jan) DAF/Optare 26051 (K331 FAL) suffered an fire believed to have been caused by an electrical fault. The fire spread from the engine compartment and has destroyed the rear of the vehicle. Whilst a full assessment has yet to be made, initial reaction is the vehicle will not be repaired.
Today (9th Jan) sister vehice 26052 (K332 FAL) suffered a similar fire - also believed to have been caused by an electrical fault - that again has damaged that vehicle. No idea yet as to the extent of the damage.
In both incidents any people abord the vehicle were quickly and safely escorted off with no danger to themselves. There are no casualties to report in either incident.
I must stress at this stage there is no evidence to suggest that the two incidents are anything other than 'sheer bad luck' and it is just a fluke that two consequtive vehicles have suffered seemingly identical fires on consequtive days.
HOWEVER. As a precautionary measure, until the cause of both incidents is established, and to allow for inspection and/or modifications to the other DAF/Optares in the fleet, all vehicles of this type with Stagecoach in Yorkshire were removed from service this afternoon. Inspections are taking place overnight. Arrangements have been made - should the DAF/Optares be unable to return to service tomorrow - for Barnsley to loan buses from other depots in Yorkshire (incl Chesterfield).

Pure luck if you ask me. If it is a fault with the vehicle type, it would be even more of a coincidence that the same fate occured to both units on two consecutive days. However, good that Stagecoach are being wise and throughly checking other vehicles of this type within the fleet.

All DAF/Optares in the fleet were inspected yesterday evening / over night and no faults were found.
Furthermore it now appears that the two vehicles which caught fire were not due to the same fault, or anything other than 'pure chance'. The fact that two seemingly similar incidents happened on consequitive days is nothing short of freakish behaviour.
As as result, as vehicles had been inspected and given a clean bill of health they were returned to traffic from this morning.
