I seem to remember, that after Mainline Dominator 2233 was re-engined with a Volvo Engine the rear seats in the upper saloon was barred off. Why?
Also was there something similar with the Gardner engined one?

Sean The Volvo engined dominator had seats taken out as the weight of passengers at the rear went over the Axle weight limits and failed the tilt test. Gardiner's were fitted to dominator's long before Rolls-Royce's-and were not a problem.

1913 A113 XWE now that was a bus! Cummins L10 engined MCW. Superb bus. 2233-Exocet powered Dominator. Prone to overheating though. Not practical with seating.

An un-governed Rolls-Royce Domiantor would have given it a run for its money. Anyone remember 2229/2467-70 at Herries that were unrestricted to compete with Sheffield Omnibus?. Optare Delta/Lynx 2/B10B/Lance could not catch them on run up to Firth park. Mind you you could not lose sight of them with thick clouds of Black smoke coming out. 2184 recieved a Perkins Eagle engine in its Rotherham Mainline days and that was smoothest/refined Dominator i ever went on.

I do believe it was possible to negotiate Shoreham street/suffolk road sideways in a Dodge S56 with said Pilot at wheel. ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png)

Or lock 3rd out, place Retarder lever on first notch to keep in 1st gear then releasing to change into 2nd, then unlocking 3rd when revs at right level! so in theory yes.

Domos were restricted purely on grounds of fuel economy. The amount of power that could be expelled by an Eagle (an engine designed for use in boats) was huge. 2233 also kept craking the gearbox mounting.

Yes operators of Volvo re-engined Nationals found out that apart from gearbox wearing out a hell of a lot quicker, the weight and torque basically pulled the engine mountings and rear end structure apart. Same TD101 engine as 2233.

While we are on the subject, did the D-OWE Dominators have the same engine as the rest of the fleet, or did they have a different/improved one to account for their increased weight? I always thought they sounded different to the rest of the Dominator fleet..
Also, did the C-JWEs get new engines in the last couple of years of their lives? They seemed to start singing a different tune..

Not that some of them performed any better. 1941-1960 the Fastline MCW's were also fitted with the same engine although 1947 gained a normal Gardner 6LXB out of an Alexander bodied Metrobus that came from Kelvin during its last 12 months in Sheffield. and it went a hell of a lot better too!.

Metrobus or Dominator on the X32. Which is the better bus and unlikely to change lane for you when a gust of wind pushed you to one side? Only one way to find out.......fight!!!!!
