I have got bitten by the moddeling bug.. I wanted to try something small for my first attempt and do something that I dont think anyone has had a go at doing before so i got myself a Corgi original omnibus Ulsterbus optare model.. and I have started to tranform it in to a tramlink optare Its not easy doing a freehand painted curve! comments welcome but be gentle! ;D

comments welcome but be gentle! ;D Andy, that's great! As are the other modelling shots pictured recently - I've not commented on previous threads, but I'm in awe of the skills involved. Hats off

Cheers guys, Its not that brilliant close up as you can see the brush marks in the paint but it was easier than spraying it plus by hand painting i can leave some of the detail such as lights intact, yes i have used the phoenix precision paint for it transit, I have yet to do the orange when i'm feeling brave enough! ;D Its almost impossible to mask the curve up because of the indentations in the body panels etc. so i;m just trying to paint it freehand

Thanks Andy - just for information , Phoenix do both Stagecoach shades ie: the older "toothpaste stripe" style , and the newer "beachball" livery . There is also a product by Humbrol which you can use for masking wavy/awkward shapes ect which is called Maskol . It comes in a small jar , and is like a pink emulsion. You just paint the area you want masked, then do your paintwork ect, then when all is dry, peel the Maskol off just like you would masking tape ! Only a couple of quid from a model shop , and always handy to have , believe me !

Thanks transit, do you mean this as the older livery? grant-thomson-buses.fotopic.net/p23276702.htmlI got the colours listed for "south west trains" which i just presumed was the current "beachball" livery. as for the liquid masking stuff I would still have to paint that on freehand wouldnt i to get the curved line up the side of the model? or is there any secret for getting it spot on?

yeah thats the one which is still available as a bus colour (or old stock!) - thats why i suggested the train livery version of paint as that is the newer colours and was used on the tram ! As for the Maskol ,it would be ok to try when awkward to mask with tape , like over lights , mouldings ect . and if it doesnt look right , just peel off and try again ! Another way to do the curve ,would have been to paint from the back , forward ,- meaning you would do the orange upto blue curve on the back edge (which is easier) , then do the red upto orange , leaving the orange curve the correct shape - rather than paint the orange curve separate?- just another way to bear in mind ! Looking at the curve you have already done , i dont think you will have a problem !

Looks good Andy.
Transit, regarding this Maskol, is it like paint then, you paint it onto areas you wish not to get paint on, then it forms into a layer sort of thing that can be peeled off then?
Thanks.

I cant understand how you would get a straight line with it tho? surely its only as straight as you could paint it on?

...maybe ! - but if people cant do freehand , straight lines would be done using masking tape. The Maskol is mostly used where you cant get perfect adhesion over irregular shapes or hard to tape angles ect with masking tape. Also ideal to mask curves (which are hard to shape with tape) when you are spraying a model.
