A final nail in the coffin for Sheffield city centre or an improved passenger base for the local public transport network and the various Park and Ride sites located around the city?
On-street parking charges are soaring by 17 per cent, from £1.70 to £2 per hour, to help Sheffield Council raise extra income and offset the impact of £50 million Government cuts. Although the current one-hour waiting limit is being removed, fees for longer stays in the city centre will be £4 for two hours, £8 for four hours and £16 for eight hours.
These revised parking charges will come into effect from April 15, 2013.

Well, I know I am one of those very "privileged" members of our Society,( having had a bus -pass awarded for years of meritorious financial contributions made to UK PLC) and I use it when I need to come into "town". I park my car in Park and Ride ( cost £2.50) and then either bus or tram it into the "metropolis". By using the excellent Free Bus I can then easily visit the bottom of the Moor so it really doesn't matter to me what they charge for on street parking! Doubtless, in their need to overtax the poor citizenry of this once great City, the Park and Ride charges will also increase and then, like countless others, I shall have to fork out some extra cash. As it is, my trips into town are probably only weekly.... but my heart goes out to those who have little alternative but to use their cars. ( not everyone finds public transport convenient) and SCC's actions will merely add to the growing downturn in trade! insert code here

What is there in Sheffield anyway. I don't see them been as proactive as Rotherham Council in attracting new independent niche shops, or providing other incentives such as tax breaks and free parking in the run up to Christmas. I do feel for the shops in Sheffield city centre and do wonder if this will be the final nail in the coffin with people choosing to do their shopping elsewhere at Crystal Peaks, Drakehouse, Meadowhall or even Parkgate.
However it shouldn't be forgotten that Sheffield city council wont have taken this step likely. It will be more due to the cutbacks imposed by our delightful Conservative country who are running it into the ground!

The need to find cuts in spending/ increase income, may well have not been of SCC's making but the Council's active 'discouraging' of the motorist has a long, long history in this once fair borough of ours!

Indeed and I can say I bet SCC are glad there are no local elections this May. Otherwise we may have seen a return to Lib Dem ruling of the council!

I just wish we could have a Council which had the welfare and promotion of the City, as a whole, as its priority!
