The old Wayfarer machines are to be retired with the new machines out in service from Monday 8th July. The new machines are touch screen and can work with smart cards, from Monday Senior/Disabled bus passes will get scanned and all the monthly Megariders bought online will be issued as smart cards rather than paper tickets.

I've been wondering when they would get round to modernising the ticketing system on the tram - but I can't see how this is an upgrade other than the smart card support, it looks a lot more clunky to use and carry around. I hope they work well though and that there won't be too much additional disruption on Monday.

Didn't they have a half- hearted attempt a few years ago to upgrade the machines?

Yes, they trialled a small number of machines similar (if not the same) to the one in the picture above. I remember the conductors finding them very difficult when it was busy.

Yes, just been on a tram today and I can imagine a few problems at peak time.

www.stagecoachbus.com/news/yorkshire/2019/august/st-new-ticket-machine-pilotNew Ticket Machine Testing - From 04 September 2019 30 Aug 2019 We are now in the final stages of developing a new ticket machine for our conductors. This new machine will be able to accept card and contactless payments on board the tram. As part of this development, a pilot of the new machine will take place from Wednesday 04 September 2019. During the pilot, a small number of conductors will be able to accept card payments, although the majority of conductors will still be using the current machine and will still only be able to take cash. The conductors with the new machines will be easily identifiable by their pink Hi-Vis vests. Please look out for more information on when we will switch over to the new machines.
