The seven "Tram Train" vehicles are going to be here soon (November according to www.britishtramsonline.co.uk/news/?p=11663), so (since through running to Rotherham/ Parkgate seems to be getting further and further away), has anyone heard anything about increasing/ changing frequencies on the existing Supertram routes when these seven vehicles arrive? Services to Hillsborough are already busy enough before the Sheffield Bus Partnership changes (which may mean a reduction of almost half the buses through Shalesmoor), but are there any plans to use the new vehicles on these existing routes to improve services? Just curious as it won't be long until they are at Nunnery Square.

I understand there is going to be changes to the timetable from March next year .Very little has changed since start of services in 1994 . The only big change was diverting the purple to Cathedral .

I can imagine they might be used to/from Meadowhall at peak times as that's probably the busiest route at peak times

The first of the new trams arrives at Nunnery depot towards the end of this year, however it will be used for testing and training for a few months before being joined by the second new tram, at which point one can go into public service.
A full timetable review is underway taking into account both performance and passenger numbers.
A minor tweak is expected this October, a bigger tweak next year once the first of the new trams are available for service then a complete new timetable launch when the tram-train service commences.
The first priority in the new timetable will be to modify journey times and layover times to reflect current traffic conditions and ensure the service runs reliably. The second aim will then be to increase capacity where it is needed and also potentially reduce it where it isn't needed.
Expect announcements in due course.

What's your take on here capacity increases are required? From my experience Middlewood services seem busier than Malin Bridge ones, but I don't know if they could run more to one than the other easily without messing up reliability (e.g. increasing the Hillsborough frequency to every four minutes with ten an hour to Middlewood and five an hour to Malin Bridge). Herdings Park always seems a waste of time, but there's no scope for reducing a service that's already only every half hour. Would it work if they tried eight an hour to Crystal Peaks but with only four an hour off-peak continuing to Halfway? (can't remember where the points are to allow reversals) Cathedral already gets busy enough with Purple reversals but manually changing the points at Shalesmoor isn't a simple process. Increases sound good, but I don't know where the priorities should be.

could increase blue's and yellow's to every 8 minutes, just run Purple to Cathedral. whatever they do with Purple it will get in way of a blue or yellow, lol.

There is a crossover just after the Crystal Peaks stop at Beighton....When trams have been delayed they sometimes drop Halfway passengers off at this stop and return to Town...leaving Halfway passengers to catch the following tram. This, presumably, is done to help the tram regain some lost time.
Halfway terminus is the park and ride stop where very many "out of towners" park to travel by Tram into Sheffield. My impression is that Halfway itself is quite well used but the other stops toward Crystal Peaks less so.

I would: Reduce the blue to every 15 minutes, with purple increased to Every 15 minutes. This would make a 7-8 minute frequency into the City from Gleadless, which I run run both through to Middlewood, rather than Malin Bridge or Meadowhall. I would then run Meadowhall to Catherdal Every 10 minutes, with alternative journeys continuing to Malin Bridge Every 20 minutes.
Once tram/train starts, Anybody know what the planned service frequency is going to be?

Running the blue every 15 minutes is a poor idea imo, remember there's the additional morning journeys on a blue currently. Does also get rather full on a 10 minute frequency, especially on a Sunday when its every 20 minutes however it's not been that obvious recently because of this year's rail works. Purples will be used more from Herdings if the frequency was higher (such as when blues were diverted to Herdings last year) but there's no point sacrificing a busy route for a route which may not expand as much as hoped if the frequency is increased to every 15.

One year on, is there any news on possible service changes/bringing the new units into service before the Rotherham branch opens?
