Doncaster is set to gain city status! I wonder if this means the DFT and CrossCountry will feel obliged to reinstate more services to and from Birmingham and the South and to and from Newcastle running through Doncaster, surely Doncaster will be more of a priority now. It would also mean faster links between Sheffield and York (popular for the races & Ladies' Day).

I think it could possibly, more of final straw that breaks the camel's back and makes the DFT cave in and reinstate them. There is already a problem with connection times at Birmingham New street for those wanting to go to the South. Pressure must be mounting. Perhaps this city status could tip things over the edge.

You're deluding yourself mate. City status means nothing, there are way smaller cities that don't get a better service just because they are a city. Doncaster is a big town (even with city status) and is very well served for a town its size.

Definitely, on that basis Ripon should have a Main line station and links to everywhere and maybe Wells can have a high frequency rapid transit system.

Was Ripon once a route deviation that provided direct links to the South Coast? No. As I said I think the city status could be the final pressure point to re-introduce the direct services to and from Reading/Southampton/York/Newcastle/Guildford via Doncaster.
