NEW DONCASTER NIGHT BUSES INTRODUCED 26 April 2006
A network of six weekend 'night buses' will be introduced in Doncaster from Friday 5 May to make it easier and safer for revellers to get home after a night on the town.
All the buses will depart from Hallgate, close to the town's pubs and clubs, and will travel to Edlington, Rossington, Bentley, Skellow, Cantley and Armthorpe.
Each service will have four departures at hourly intervals on Friday and Saturday nights, with a flat fare of just £3. All the buses are operated by First.
Roy Wicks, Director General at the Transport Executive, said: "Thousands of people go out in Doncaster every weekend and we want to ensure there are good bus links to help them get home safely."
He added: "This is a new initiative for the town, and we hope that its success will lead to more night bus networks in other South Yorkshire centres."
An extensive marketing campaign targeted at an audience of pub and club goers is being rolled out across Doncaster to promote the services.
"These services provide a reliable, safe and cost effective way of travelling home after enjoying Doncaster's night life" commented Brandon Jones, Commercial Director of First.
The night buses are a joint initiative between Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council, First, South Yorkshire Police and the Transport Executive, with funding from the Doncaster Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.
Police Inspector Iain Chorlton of the Doncaster Evening Economy Partnership said: "The introduction of the night buses is a great opportunity to further enhance the safety and enjoyment of the patrons of the evening economy of Doncaster. To ensure this, extra police officers and other partners will be deployed as 'Bus Marshals' to provide both a reassuring presence, but also to ensure standards of behaviour and challenge wrong doing."
