due to there being no steep gradients I'd love to see that get between Park Square and Fitzalan Square...no steep gradients?!

The steepest gradient on the network is actually said to be the incline between Woodbourn Road to Nunnery Square.

A quick search reveals that the steepest sections are Netherthorpe and Woodbourne Roads which @ 10% are the steepest in the UK. The rest are said to be max 6%...I find it difficult to believe that the long yomp up Park Grange is only a 1 in 16 climb!

I would say Woodbourn Road due to the short climb. Netherthorpe is also has bad, its just longer.

Will be why our trams are arguably the best for performance and power in the U.K. and some of the best in the world, in order to cope with the steep gradients on the network.

Great, another German firm. Isn't it about time they started supporting British jobs, same goes for the franchise announcement for the National Rail stock that was recently announced, also awarded to the Germans...

EU laws prevent companies from picking a winning contract based on nationality - this was one of the cources of controversy regarding the job losses at Bombardier in recent weeks.

Just seems that the French and the Germans know how to use the rules. I was told way back in the 70s, by a German customer, that they "made the rules and they broke the rules.Only the silly****** British followed them"! Something about our national character .Don't forget though that almost everyone in Europe, except us, has maintained their rail infrastructure to a greater extent than have we....and that includes manufacturing.... which Mrs T derided. Rotherham was once a major source of railway forgings and wheels and axles....and a few locomotives. Sheffield also supplied some locomotives as well as cast steel bogies and alloy steels... in large quantities.Doncaster manufactured railway rolling stock and locomotives....It's all gone in this region apart, from the small amount of rail engineering left in Doncaster.... so, Bombardier apart, where can anyone buy rolling stock in the UK...unless you want a few wagons where we still have a foothold. with W H Davis

I agree that the 2014 target is optimistic. The article states that there will be a 20 minute service to Parkgate in Rotherham but does not mention calling at Rotherham Central. The Tram-Train units featured on the Vossloh website are metre gauge but they do look similar in configuration to the current Supertram units. Vossloh Tram-Train data sheetVossloh Tram-Train product pageIf it is to be running on the Rotherham - Parkgate line, could this mean that we are about to see a staggered timetable on this service also, as with the local train services rather than a clock face 20 minute timetable?

A further bit of good news regarding the tram-trains trial, though until works actually commence onsite, I shall believe it when I see it sadly. No doubt there will be another flaw in the scheme and something will need to be changed or scaled back, as with what occurred last time around.
