That's the headline in the Railway Mag. The new regulations on inter-operability for disabled passenger mean the 142 units are deemed unsuitable for modification. The 143 and 144 units are also likely to go. What good news for this old bloke who has complained about them for years!  |

The breaks are just too bad its like a bus without any tyres but on tracks there no good the 158,321,333 should replace them

Don't hold your breath!
Electrification to Sheffield was stated to be in CP5(by 2019) but already now 2020 & that's with 5 years to go.
If that & further electrification schemes slip further they will still be needed until the wires appear for replacement stock to become available.
Easy to grant an exemption!

I believe Porterbrook who own the 143s and 144s have published a proposal for modernisation. Not seen any proposals for the 142s yet.

No dates mentioned but you'd hope they want them to be ready for 2019 - we can only wait and see... At least there is now some positive news about it instead of suggestion that they will try and modify the horrid things! |

Well hopefully a reputable operator will get Northern Rail franchise anyway, I think it is highly likely that someone else will and not the current operators.

Bidders will be encouraged to replace the outdated Pacer trains with rolling stock fit for the 21st century, while a 20 per cent increase in capacity is also sought. Looks like it's only a might  The Chancellor told MPs that “replacing the ancient and unpopular pacer carriages with new and modern trains” would be part of the new northern and transpennine rail franchises due to come into force in 2016. But the detailed Treasury documents released alongside the statement suggest the Government will only “encourage bidders to replace the outdated pacer trains” rather than make it a requirement of the companies awarded the franchises which cover the bulk of local services in the region. |

I am not holding my breath. There's another election due in 5 Months time and whoever wins looks certain to be making more cuts in everything. Northern's franchise is already the most heavily subsidised so I can't see the Exchequer being too willing to let the DfT approve a purchase of new stock. We shall just have to wait and see...meanwhile, whatever happened to the lot who wanted to preserve a nodding donkey?
