This is a new series of lists of SYPTE destination blinds from over the years. I'm also planning to list the SYPTE operating instructions for the period and some Mainline blinds to finish with. I will try and explain any weird items as I go along!
To start things off, here's a list from Halfway (January 1985).
* = blank
TOP
* Sheffield Halfway Killamarsh Hallowes Estate Eckington Green Lane Dronfield Westfield Mosborough Beighton Swallownest Hackenthorpe Harthill Spinkhill Sheffield Rotherham Eckington Clay Cross Hillsborough Rother Valley Park *
BOTTOM
* Football School Fastline (white on blue) Whitwell Colliery Renishaw Park Colliery Kiveton Park Colliery High Moor Colliery Private Charter Garage Circular Not in Service *
Notes:
Green Lane was for use on the Dronfield Quicklink services (remember them?) and Hillsborough was for the special match day Hillsborough - Kiveton Park service 900.
The bottom blind shows only a fraction of the colliery contracts operated, but as some were on NCB contracts, they showed 'Private Charter'.
In 1987, the destination 'Granada Bingo Birley' was added to the top blind, but interestingly, 'Dyke Vale Road' wasn't, until a new blind set was made in 1989.
ANYONE who has a list copy of Swift blinds from 1970, 'Y' type leopard blinds, National Blind or a 'red' Fastline set, please let me know! Keep tuned for further updates, all districts to come!

Superb. Thank you.
Any chance you and Sam can get together and put a web-page together to display these in?

Superb. Thank you. Any chance you and Sam can get together and put a web-page together to display these in? That is a great thought and when completed I can add this to a webpage, currently undergoing a massive new change to all the websites, I currently have a beta website now online which will be where the www.travelsy.co.uk domain name will be directed to from May 1st, the website is here if any of you are interested in having a sneak preview, just Click Here To View.Ta, Sam

Absolutely brilliant! Thanks for starting these lists brownncream.
How come Clay Cross was on a Halfway blind from 1985 though?

Thanks for these. What I find interesting about these is that they have "Hillsborough" on, as you said for Service 900 Kiveton Park - Hillsborough, but no corresponding display of plain "Kiveton Park".

Glad everyone likes them, will gladly put them on Sam's website - just let me know what you need!
Answers for 2 queries for you, Clay Cross refers to service 200,a very strange Sheffield - Chesterfield - Clay Cross service with so many restrictions that it became in essence a worthless link unless you lived at the ends of the route. For example, whilst the service served Chesterfield, local passengers could not use the service to get off from the Clay Cross end, but could get on to go to Sheffield.
Kiveton Park is not shown on the blind, as when service 900 returned from Hillsborough, it would display either 'Private Charter' or blank, as passengers had to purchase a return ticket on this route, in order to travel. In addition, Kiveton Park would have been added to National blinds at Halfway (I have no list unfortunately) for service 264, so as in the case of Worksop (also missing from this blind) it would have been impossible to have accidently put a double deck on the route.
Hope to get time to put another on the forum tonight.

Time for another blind! This is a Halfway example from 1988/9 and finishes off this garage from my records.
TOP
* Sheffield Dyke Vale Road Holbrook * Harthill Spinkhill Elm Tree Sheffield Halfway Killamarsh Crystal Peaks Eckington Ballifield Darnall Woodhouse Westfield Beighton Beighton Circular Westfield Circular Westfield Mosborough Swallownest * Rotherham Eckington Crystal Peaks * Dronfield Coal Aston Gosforth Sheffield Chesterfield Holmesfield Plumbley Sheffield City Centre Holbrook Sothall Beighton Meadowgate Rother Valley Park *
BOTTOM
* Via Gleadless Via Woodhouse * Kiveton Park Colliery Renishaw Park Colliery * High Moor Marsh Lane Eckington School Wales School Netherthorpe * Woodall Harthill Clowne School Belph Portland School Shireoaks Stradbroke Birley * Fastline (text) Private Party Circular School Sorry not in Service *
Notes:
You may notice a mistake on the above list. Westfield is shown twice and displays for Beighton Circular and Westfield Circular were included in error - these being for single deck only. The same is true of the 'Sheffield City Centre' destination - meant for services M58 and M59 which terminated at Arundel Gate.
Holbrook was to be used for garage runs to Halfway garage and for journeys to Holbrook industrial estate on the 'blink and you'll miss it' service 255.
Some Derbyshire destinations are shown. These were for a network to be run in competition with Chesterfield Transport that never got off the ground.
Sothall and Meadowgate are the same place, and no explanantion exists as to why these were included together.
On the bottom blind can be seen a number of school destinations. Belph is a district of Worksop. The via destinations were to be used for services 259/M58/M59 and for service 30.
Stradbroke and Birley are included for a college contract to Norton which was operated briefly.
Halfway was in the same engineering group as Midland Road, hence the distinct lack of CITY on destination blinds. For those who don't know, that is why Halfway used Almex ticket machines as they were part of a separate union branch.
Hopefully, time permitting, more on Tuesday!

Wow! This is fascinating, many thanks for sharing the list.
It seems so long ago now I can remember seeing Elm Tree, Ballifield and Plumbley when drivers were scrolling the blinds. When did the Beighton and Westfield Circulars end? I can't remember either of these and the 255 service.
Keep on with the uploads, its great!

The 260/261 died in the early 1990's (budget cuts/end of tender - but to be honest, apart from Westfield Crescent and Wulfric Road, they had no route of their own). The 255 continued right to the end of service X55 - it consisted of a maximum of 2 journeys. I will dig the t/t out at a later date.

Sheffield District blind from 1981 up next. This set of blinds were introduced for Dennis Dominators then entering the fleet in huge numbers.

Notes:
A pretty standard list, with the usual PRINCE OF WALES RD. start to it. However, a number of things are quite striking.
Firstly, SANDSTONE ROAD makes a proper appearance. Prior to this, it was added as an insert, make at Queens Road. This was despite the estate being ready in 1975.
WYMING BROOK is missing from the 51 section of display - surely an abnormality, as it appears on earlier and later blinds.
BASE GREEN was used for a night service only. In true STD/SYPTE fashion, some destinations that were needed/used frequently were missed off, whilst others that only made a single view were included.
LONGLEY is near the BATEMOOR display, rather than nearer SANDSTONE ROAD as it was expected that services 1 and 36 would be linked to form an additional cross city service. A number of C.C. services were proposed at this time, and are included in the SYPTE development plan of 1978.
COLLIERY was mainly to be used for Brookhouse Colliery services. The colliery itself couldn't be reached by DD's, so the 723 was actually run by SD's or Y type coaches. The coaches would show blank, whilst National's could show COLLIERY.
HERRINGTHORPE V. RD was along forgotten terminus for service 287, replaced by the turning circle at BRECKS, which was included on Rotherham district blinds.
The two Walkley displays are needed as the service use to run to two different terminus points. The SOUTH ROAD terminus is behind what is now Netto's on South Road.
COMMONSIDE was used for Elm Tree - Commonside shorts on service 95 - buses terminated by turing round in the wide road outside Commonside bank.
BUS STATION makes its first show. This blind was specifically for service 60, but could show up on almost anything. This was particularly annoying if you lived outside the city.
STRADBROKE is used for the former turning circle at Hardcastle Road (the last time I saw it, it had been grassed over, but was extant at least up to 1993).
The two Crookes displays, as the 95, sgowed that the service split for the majority of the day. The SCHOOL ROAD termius was behind the former tram sheds.
DORE is located near TOTLEY BROOK because it was going to be the new terminus of service 17. This was abandoned due to the fact that trees needed cutting up to Dore, and the local populance (who wanted the service) wouldn't let it happen!
Other notable missing destinations included EWDEN VALLEY, DUNGWORTH and any sort of display for Rivelin Post Office, where most journeys on service 54 terminated, rather than RIVELIN DAMS.
Finally, WOMBWELL is included, despite most journeys being operated by single deck vehicles.
More blinds on Wednesday!

Love all this - thank you brownncream for these, but as a blinds fan it always surprised me how illogical the Sheffield blind set could be. ... For example the 24 would have 24 / * / TOTLEY (i.e. blank on top, Totley on bottom) and then have to change to 24 / BRINSWORTH / * to return in the other direction. Or all the winding on the 17 from 17 / * / TOTLEY BROOK to 17 / HILLSBOROUGH / ATTERCLIFFE. The lack of Rivelin P.O. isn't that surprising - at the time of the introduction of the Dominators, just about ALL the 54's terminated at Rivelin Dams, as it was crew operated and reversed using the pub car park. It was only when the service went OPO that it was cut back to Rivelin Post Office. Another insert at some point was HALLAMSHIRE HOSPITAL (on two lines), as the turning circle there came much later. That was inserted after Dyke Vale Road on the top blind. Notable missing item was MARCHWOOD for the 87. They always had to show 87 / * / *. And we have items that were renamed on later blinds: ROSCOE BANK becoming "Hall Park Head" (with a small extension to the route), ELM TREE becoming "Manor Top", GREYSTONES becoming "Greystones Road" for a time. Surprising to still see WALKLEY SOUTH ROAD, as I'm sure those short workings had ceased by the 80s. CROOKES SCHOOL ROAD was of course still round and hated those short workings, they always caught me unawares as a passenger. Enough for me, I can bore for hours on this subject.

Seems strange to stop just short of the busiest stops - the one by Just Natural is the busiest on the route these days! Fascinating thread

Blinds can be very fascinating - even non-enthusiasts sometimes make comment on the varied places shown on them.
I would be surprised if SYT hadn't considered the arrangements of the places when designing the blind. For example, LRT blinds always have "Riccarton" next to "Restalrig", as they are at opposite ends of the route. This does create problems of course when termini change - I don't pity the driver who has to get from "Baberton" to "Hyvots Bank"...

Yeah, when the Hyvots Bank route was swapped from the 31 (East Craigs) to 7 (Newhaven) that messed things up for a bit. I can remember seeing them go through the blinds at SYT before, how all the Ecclesall Road and Hillsborough destinations next to each other (no longer necessary, of course...).

Thanks again brownncream for the Sheffield area list.
Surprised to see Eckington on though. I thought it would have only been on the Halfway blinds.
