Notes
SYT had a visit from the TC in 1988. A particularly scathing judgement on the state of destination displays in Rotherham, resulted in SYT being ordered to brush up its attitude or be subject to a Traffic Court hearing.
In the event, both happened. SYT did have to go to Traffic Court, but this set of displays being produced. In addition, staff at Rotherham were now instructed to display numbers on the side display.
Whilst this was a brand new set, some buses received a 'lower case' version of the 1983 blindset in 1985, and simply had the 'East Bank' destinations added to it.
On the top blind, note the lack of internediate blank displays. 'Greasbrough' was an insert added just as the blind was introduced. 'East Dene' replaces the Tennyson Road and Far Lane displays. 'Thurnscoe' etc. were on this blind, as it was also used as a single deck/coach blind.
On the lower blind, in the Sheffield section, note the inclusion of 'Woodseats'. This is for the early morning Sunday journey on service 39. Notice that any display for Margate Drive is missing.
On the first draft of this blind 'Chancet Wood' was spelt incorrectly as 'Chauncet Wood' and was altered us in the Marketing department.

The TC would have a coronary if they looked at today's displays, then.

A 1991 issue from Sheffield. Note that the TOP blind is also the same for a VOLVO s/d.

Notes
This is the first blind produced by SYT for the Sheffield fleet, and also the last black and white on Tyvek. However, the blind is poorly set out, and is illogical in its use of destinations. The typeface is all over the shop, supposedly Helvetica, but in some places it has to be condensed or set out on two lines.
As the top blind is also for Volvo's, it includes all the 'Mainline' destinations. An insert added in 1994 was DYKE VALE ROAD in the '95' section of the blind. Notice LEEDS, not seen on a main blind since the red and white FASTLINE issue.
The bottom blind includes all the secondary and minibus destinations. NORFOLK PARK is on for the now long forgotten M28, TODWICK makes a re-appearance. HATHERSAGE and FOX HOUSE are long term absentees from any blind (they were on STD issues). PARKHEAD was for a schools service. Notice the lack of things such as SANDSTONE ROAD and MALTBY, as they were operated by Sheafline at the time, and they had their own blindset. The 'college' destinations are odd, as all of the short lived college services were operated by Halfway, who didn't get this set of blinds.
Basically, when this set was replaced in 1995, I don't think anyone really cared!

HATHERSAGE and FOX HOUSE are long term absentees from any blind (they were on STD issues) These are absolutely fascinating posts - I really appreciate you taking the time to type them out. Out of interests, what SYT/ Mainline etc services have ever terminated at Fox House or Hathersage? Going out that direction, Ringinglow and Dore were obviously termini, but the next "terminus" out that way I can think of is Castleton/ Bakewell. Or was it just a "via" point? The only Sheffield services I can think of that have terminated there are the 284, and maybe the 257?

It was certainly a shock when this blind set first appeared - completely unlike anything else before it. I liked the endless possibities for stupidity with this blind set.
CITY CENTRE & MOORFOOT / VIA CITY CENTRE CITY CENTRE / VIA CITY CENTRE WOODHOUSE VIA STANDON ROAD / VIA STANDON ROAD
Oh you could go on for ages.
The inclusion of Parkhead was also bizarre, ulnless that was needed for a school route, but I can't think of one.
Hathersage and Fox House were often used for destinations for duplicates on the 240 and 272 on Bank Holidays. Not sure how they would have managed to actually turn at either of them. And given the date of this blind (i.e. well into SYT days, totally unlikely to ever have been displayed, as duplicates were just about completely non-existent anyway by this point!)
The only other destinations out in Derbyshire land would also have been EDALE, as used by the Sunday 280 service, which was a complete flop of a route. There's a good story about that route too, in that a National went out there for route learning, but when they tried to start it up at Edale to bring it back to Sheffield the ignition key snapped in the lock and they couldn't get going again (Nationals were the only bus I know of with a key operated starter). Whoops.

Whoops. The 280 was a funny old service, it covered lots of different routes in the Peak District in different years IIRC - wasn't it an extension of the Chesterfield - Marsh Lane - Sheffield service? (and when the 80 was withdrawn it was replaced by the e/s 45?)

Dougie, the 280 was a completely new service. Went from Sheffield up to Ringinglow via Ecclesall, Knowle Lane and Ringinglow Road and then somehow meandered on to Edale. Never saw anybody on it.

The 280 was well used by walkers the strikes circle was used by pass holders for cheap travel.
When the 280 was done a load of drivers were sent out a bus one thursday to route learn the bus got stuck on the bridge going up to edale - chaos 15 duties to cover .

Whoops. Glad everyone is enjoying these - another one on Monday (time pressures today). PARKHEAD was for service 750, a service from Millhouses Primary School to Parkhead. Needless to say, it died a death after the 1992 tender round. FOX HOUSE shorts use to take the Owler Bar road and then turn right on to the Fox House/Hathersage road and recess just prior to the pub. The main uses for these were on Sunday's when the entire population of Sheffield wanted to go walking and return home on the same bus! The Edale story is one that I had heard. On the first Sunday of operation, it snowed and the bus and inspectors van that went with it got stuck (If my memory servres me right!). Nationals were a shocker to drive and the brakes faded badly.

Notes
Possibly one of the most comprehensive displays ever used on a Sheffield dd. Printed on dayglo plastic (McKenna 'Glow' to be precise), it is the last blnd ever printed for the Sheffield fleet, laid out in the traditional STD manner.
This blind was for Olive Grove, Greenland and Halfway (finally, the comapny respects that Halfway is within Sheffield).
NOte on the top blind the two different forms of Meadowhall. Why? Good question - I don't know, it's the same place!
On the bottom is a lot of secondary destinations. NORWOOD is for a district of Killamarsh, but was also used on the short lived service 40 which terminated at Herries Road Tesco. HEATHLANDS is a new estate behind Morrisons, used for the X41. MARSH LANE is on for Halfway schools. BIRLEY really should be on the top, in the 95 section. HIGHFIELD and LOWFIELD make a first time appearance. Basically used for the old 72 and odd journeys on service 75, turning via Chesterfield Road, Wolseley Road and Abbeydale Road. WARREN LANE was for a morning journey on service 75.
The schools are on, as at that time the TC's were getting very worked up that as these services were available for everyone, they needed to be advertised and the correct destination had to be displayed. The via STRADBROKE destination is unusual, and I can't think of a service that used it. The via HUTCLIFFE WOOD and WOODSEATS destinations were for service 501/502 so people could easily see the difference. OUTER CIRCLE is weird. The service hasn't been a true circular for nearly 40 years!

The 75 still runs to Warren Lane, albeit only twice a day M- F.
Could this explain why the N - CKY's have Maltby & Cedar Drive on their destination blind rollers if they were at Greenland Road.
On a side note did the 69 used to be operated by Greenland Road as I think it did, but can not remember 100%.

On a side note did the 69 used to be operated by Greenland Road as I think it did, but can not remember 100%. The N/CKY's never put a foot in GR (and the engineers weren't very happy about it) as they were bought for the 'track' (81 etc.) in Sheffield. The 69 used to be split between Rotherham and Greenland, then in 1988 was fully allocated to Rotherham.

After a short pause, a Sheffield issue from 1995. NORWOOD NORWOOD is for a district of Killamarsh, but was also used on the short lived service 40 which terminated at Herries Road Tesco. I don't remember that 40 40 seems to be one of these "unlucky" numbers, it never lasts more than a couple of years: There was the 40 (Crystal Peaks to City Centre via Duke Street, copy of the sut 120), the 40 (evening and sunday version of the 42 from Grenoside to Hemsworth, but via the 421 route in Meersbrook), the 40 (Sheffield Omnibus City Centre - Woodseats - Batemoor) and the 40 (City Centre - Fulwood), but I can't think of one that terminated at Norwood.

Another great list brownncream, thanks.
Nice to see that Eckington is still around in 1995 but surprised it's not on the minibus blind from 1989 yet I can remember seeing minibuses in Eckington on the 263 in 1989 - must be Halfway ones?
