I wonder if they will offer £10+ an hour, 6 weeks holiday plus bank holidays .......if so they might get a lot of interest. Dont think they need to. For any First staff living in Barnsley or close by it must be appealing. I know at least 2 that are going and a couple more that are interested. Not really. If you want a good paying role, you need to consider moving up the road to West Yorkshire. Why the big difference in terms and pay structure, who knows. Obviously have better unions!
As a comparison to one of the best operations I've seen - First Bradford.
New Starters - £9.75ph. A Rate - £12.34ph.
These rates will rise by 14p ph from 1st April 2016 (backdated to nearest Sunday), with a further 20p ph rise from 1st April 2017.
- 37hr rota week, with a guaranteed 6th day to take up to 45hrs. - Upto 12 weeks of "banked" holidays can be taken together (3 months). - Special "late off" payments on the Yellow 620 service, where if 2 minutes late or more you are owed 20 minutes overtime pay. - Dedicated staff shuttle service from the depot to Bradford Interchange. - Holiday self-selection (no dreaded holiday blocks!). - 3 staff passes, regardless of whether at the same address. - Any overtime carried out, is paid at least 2 hours minimum pay.
Now if only the same could be said for ANY operator in South Yorkshire... First Bradford clearly has one of the better unions in the industry and is well known for it!

stop looking at the headline figure and start taking in the whole picture and you will find its not the wonderful job it appears.

stop looking at the headline figure and start taking in the whole picture and you will find its not the wonderful job it appears. It's all about balance. You take the good with the bad. You're never going to have perfect conditions working for a large multi-national company like First, but Bradford clearly have some of the better terms and pay throughout First. A whole lot better than what South Yorkshire has to offer.
The same can even be said for smaller independents in West Yorkshire, who have to compete for driving staff. TLC Travel the last time I checked were paying their drivers £9.02ph.

You are still not looking at the full picture. There are a lot more factors than the hourly rate, for example for how much of your shift you get it. They are on wheel time in West Yorkshire. If the wheels are not turning you are not earning. You can earn more in South Yorkshire on their lower payscales, until Unite come along and screw that up as well.

Only new starters are generally on wheel time although the tide is turning. I believe Bradford is the first? Of any First bus business to actually have walking time increased in the latest pay deal - as well as included for new starters. This was one of the unions main arguments about inequality and fairness and why such high numbers of staff turnover was occurring amongst new starters. Wheel time is not such a bad thing though. It all depends on pay scales, spread overs and duty lengths.

One of their solos parked up in Barnsley Interchange around 12pm today. Route learning maybe? I believe it has been placed there on layover until the 29th January 2017.
