.....now entered the Autopsy Dept of Bus Preservation - TINSLEY, NOT OPEN TO PUBLIC , AND NEVER WILL BE Will it ever be seen again - before being scrapped , cannbilsed, left to rot , sold on for a few quid ect ---- or the faint hope of ONE DAY being veiwed by enthusiasts once more !!! - (5 yrs +!?) As with all vehicles down there , many thanks for the pics of entering the premises - when will we see some finished products emerging apart from sold on I couldn’t have put it better myself transit, the Tinsley ‘black hole’ has become the final destination for far too many of South Yorkshire’s iconic buses. I had to laugh when I saw this picture on Flickr of Felix 42 being put into shame by Sheffield 874, Felix 42 and Sheffield 874 by gareth388, on Flickr It seems the irony of parking them side by side is lost among the ranks of Tinsley. The AEC Alexander 874 Group surely cannot be proud to see their fine and beautifully restored vehicle being lined up for comparison with a bus that has spent the last 34 years in a field. Have you any idea of the time, effort and money that goes into a proper vehicle restoration?? - not just painting the dented panels, blinds in and ticket machine on! Consider how long it has taken for other 'privately owned' vehicles in the area to emerge fully restored. Terry Ellin's Commet Coach at the SYTM for example. If it was not for the SYTT then there would not be a collection of vehicles for enthusiats to eventually see!! If the SYTT is doing such a bad job then perhaps you should come down to the Sheds and advise us on what you think we should be doing - or see first hand the effort and expenditure that is going into several vehciles down there? Perhaps you should take on one of the Trust owned vehicles, throw a few thousand pounds at it and restore it yourself so that one of the 'lost iconic vehicles' is back on the road? It is worth pointing out at this stage that the majority of the vehicles at the SYTT are privately owned and it is up to them what they do with them. This includes Felix 42. We helped the owner move it because that is what the SYTT do, and over time will help him restore it. Whats best - in a field going back to nature, or under cover?? The B10 is also privately owned. The owner, as with all residents can have as much or as little help as he wants from the SYTT. If a vehicle is privately owned and owner wants to park it up for years, do nothing with it and then sell it for scrap or otherwise dispose of it then that is their decision and we can do nothing about it. I can also assure you that the AEC Alexander Group are very pleased that Felix 42 has joined it at the SYTT. As for the Open Day, well yes we would like to have one, as if nothing else it will stop people moaning! However we can't due to the state of the building. We could make it so we could have an Open Day, but this would mean spend time money and energy on the building, which would detract from the vehicle work. As the building will be restored in any case there is no point in spending money on it now, only for the tempory work to be undone when the grant funded work starts. The prioity for SYTT has to be to continue to ensure that the Tram Sheds are restored and attend all the various meetings that are necessary with the HLF etc. Whatever shape the vehicle collection takes in the future then it is ESSENTIAL that it has a clean, dry, heated roof over it. With the Tram Sheds project that is exactly what we are doing - Restoring an iconic Sheffield building and have roof over the vehcile collection for the rest of our lives and beyond. Those who have been involved with similar projects will be well aware of the time and effort this takes to achieve. The Tram Sheds is not open to the public but private guided tours have always been possible. If you want to come and have a look at the vehicles being restored in the so called 'Black Hole', then the door is open.

I reiterate all of the above, bus restoration is an incredibly expensive hobby and with the cost of metal and the current economic climate it all adds to the pressure.

Thank-you Gareth for your informative reply, please rest assured that neither myself nor I suspect Transit were knocking the overall objectives and activities of the SYTT. The comments are more directed toward the fact that vehicles are seen going in to Tinsley after which there is a lack of any signs of visible progress due partly to the place not being able to host open days and the fact that news does not tend to be shared with outsiders.

I completely agree with the above. The flow of information from Tinsley is very poor.

The easiest way to keep updated on matters at Tinsley is to see it on Facebook. This is updated most frequently. www.facebook.com/SYTTrust#!/SYTTrust. There is a high quality in house newsletter for members, which we aim to produce 4 times a year. This sometimes does not appear this often due other committments, but for anyone that is a member there is a bumper edition at the printers now. There's no secrets at Tinsley, if you want to know whats going on then just ask. Either on here, on the SYTT Facebook, or PM me. You can also have private tours. Again Just ask.

Transit, I've re-instated the membership link etc, so it now should work ok. Your membership renewal will be with your next newsletter. Should have them back from the printers on Friday.

904 to look a bit more attractive for the new season, going to make a new panel on Saturday. The old one (which was more body filler than aluminium) has been removed and started to have the steel underneath cleaned up. It was like that when the museum inherited the vehicle from First Group.
